SOUTH BEND – Family members confirmed Tuesday that the body found buried in a city back yard is of a 58-year-old local man.

Family members said Randy Guyberson, 58, lived at and owned the home in the 200 block of East Dayton street where his body was found Sunday by police buried in a shallow grave.

Brad Guyberson said his brother moved into the home eight or 10 years ago, after having worked as a chef at restaurants in Plymouth and North Liberty.

Brad Guyberson said he and his brother weren’t particularly close – they hadn’t seen each other in about two years – but that he found the news of his brother’s death hard to believe.

"Especially the way that it happened," Brad Guyberson said.

An autopsy conducted Monday showed that Randy Guyberson had been stabbed multiple times, had his throat slit and had been hit multiple times in the head with a blunt object. The official cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head and bleeding to death.

Brad Guyberson said his brother was not married and had no children. But he said Randy was known for giving people a roof over their head.

"I know he had a lot of different people stay with him," Brad Guyberson said.

Police have arrested two Michigan men, 19-year-old Nathaniel Richerson and 27-year-old Mathew Weidler, in connection with the case.

Formal charges have not been made, but the St. Joseph County prosecutor’s office is expected to formalize charges in the case Tuesday.
