NEW CARLISLE — A sprinkle of rain is falling from the sky, but Dylan Ebersole, still in the clothes he wore to bed, just stares at the remains of the house.

Standing next to him in the driveway, wife Haley is tallying the irreplaceables.

Their wedding pictures. Her son’s baby pictures. Her wedding gown and her mom’s wedding gown. Her son’s footprints, in plaster.

Suddenly Dylan, who on normal days works a shift at AM General, speaks up.

“Stop reminding me,” he says. “It’s too much stuff.”

Sensing their mutual frustration, they both laugh.

“It’s been a long, long day,” Haley says, and the clock hasn’t struck noon.

Almost nine hours earlier, Dylan woke to what he thought was his alarm clock, only to breathe in smoke from his burning house.

The couple, along with their 2-year-old son, rushed out of the home to call 911 from a neighbor’s phone. By the time they had returned, the fire was hot enough to blow out the windows in the rear of the house.

Dylan says he bought the home in the 29500 block of Edison Road, in western St. Joseph County, five years ago as a project to fix up — eventually marrying Haley two years ago and having a baby.

As the couple renovated the house, they created a family room and extra bathrooms at the rear, putting down the last of the new carpet just a few weeks ago.

Haley Ebersole said investigators said the fire was likely caused by a malfunction in an in-window air conditioning unit in the home’s newer addition.

But by the time the family woke to the sound of smoke detectors, the rear of the home was in flames and smoke was pouring into the rooms where they slept.

Walking through the remains of her home Wednesday morning, Haley pointed to the charred remains of couches and a TV.

She showed how the smoke in her son’s room had turned the blond hardwood flooring a dark, smoky black.

In the kitchen, she pointed to where cabinets had fallen off the walls, smashing dishes and becoming entangled with the damp, burnt insulation that now covered their floors.

Standing outside, minutes after getting off the phone with his insurance company, Dylan wondered if the deck he just finished last month would have to be bulldozed.

“You spend five years of work remodeling the place, and then it’s all destroyed in 30 minutes,” he said.

Besides waiting for the insurance adjuster to arrive, the Ebersoles said, they had to go shop for clothes to wear and had to find a place to sleep for the night, if not the next several weeks.

Haley said her son, who she left in the care of family, wasn’t traumatized by the fire but instead enjoyed seeing all the fire trucks.

But with the fire trucks gone, along with much of their first home together, Dylan and Haley Ebersole said they were happy to be alive, even if they aren’t sure what the future has in store.

“If it wasn’t for the smoke detector ...,” Dylan says, leaving the thought unfinished.

“We got out,” Haley says, picking up where her husband left off. “That’s the important thing. The rest is just stuff.”

Kendrick, Thought you might like to know since you have so much interest in someone else's tragedy that the fire inspector spent 3 hours this morning going through the structure and verified what the fireman stated from the beginning. ELECTRICAL FIRE. I hope you never have to go through what my son and his family are going through now. You really are a negative person.

Marsha, what are you rambling about? Story says the fire was probably caused by a window air conditioner. The couple has ONE child, 2 yrs old, and this happened at 2:00 AM. Where do you get the idea that there were kids with matches? These comment boards sure bring out the crazies. Kendrick-I certainly hope YOU never go thru something like this. Insurance pays to replace what you have; you can't "get rich" off property insurance. If you don't rebuild/replace, you don't get $$ from the ins.

Kids love to play with matches. May be the kids started the fire in the kitchen and then spread all over the house. Parents you need to keep the kids in check, they pick any thing that causes fires and start playing with them and then you have a burned out house. If there are no kids, then there is the drunk young people that come for a visit and overpower the electrical outlets and gets hot andthe unexpected fire. check the oven the the air conditioning unit too. Hot places are everywhere.

HOW DO YOU PEOPLE GET THAT THEY DID ANYTHING INAPPROPRIATE? SOUNDS LIKE AN UNFORTUNATE EVENT THAT HAPPENED TO A YOUNG FAMILY THAT I PRAY NEVER HAPPENS TO ME. DONT MAKE COMMENTS LIKE THAT UNLESS YOU ARE WILLING TO SIGN YOUR NAME "ANONYMOUS"- ONLY A COWARD MAKES COMMENTS LIKE THAT AND DOESNT GIVE A NAME.

It certainly wasn't the smoke detector that woke them, but it was the Lord. It is so easy to take life for granted. We often think that the alarm clock wakes us up in the morning, but trust me - there are many alarm clocks that went off today, and people did not hear them. God has a divine purpose for this family - their testimony. All things work out for the good of those who love the Lord. God bless you!

I'm sorry for this couple who has worked so hard to have a nice home to raise their child. I'm also thankful that this fire didn't take anyone's life. Best wishes to these people that they can have their home re-built and have a happy family life!

Kendrick, shut up. Oh, sorry, I thought that was the theme here. And well deserved, too. I feel sorry for this family. Fire takes things that can never be replaced, but at least this one didn't take any people. God bless your recovery from this.

Most mortgage companies require the owner to insure the property at replacement value. But, I find it hard to believe that they would set their own house on fire. Fire inspectors are pretty savy, and it isn't easy to trick them.

Kenrick, get real!! People do not set their homes on fire for profit with their FAMILY in the house sound asleep. That is why we carry insurance, to protect our investments. You sound like an total moron.

That is not a very nice thing to say Kendrick! How would you feel if all your belongings (wedding, baby pictures, etc.) went up in smoke? Would you want people to jump to conclusions like you did? Not everyone is out to cheat the insurance company. I hope you never have to go thru a fire or disaster!

Um...Kendrick...be quiet. Malfunctions happen. Tragedy strikes. Be thankful these people got out alive. WHY would they risk their very LIVES for insurance? You need to quit watching so much TV.
