Indiana unemployment

ELKHART — It was a hard month for Indiana workers in July. Several RV manufacturers announced they were closing, and taking thousands of jobs away. The numbers show just that.

The state average is 6.1 percent. LaGrange County's unemployment rate was 10.3 percent. Elkhart County's average was 9.3 percent. Those two counties ranked in the top five of Indiana's 92 counties.

The numbers show another nail in the coffin for job loss in the manufacturing sector.

"Certainly with Elkhart and the RV industry, they have been hit pretty hard," said Notre Dame Economics Associate Professor Marty Wolfson.

The Indiana Department of Workforce Development unveiled new numbers that paint a grim picture.

Marshall County ranked #9 with a 8.6 percent unemployment rate. Followed by Starke County at 8.0 percent, Kosciusko County at 7.8 percent, and St. Joseph County at 7.2 percent.

Fulton County ranked #34, LaPorte ranked #58 and Pulaski ranked #69.

"It really doesn't surprise me, we've had some bad news lately," said Kyle Hannon. Hannon is the vice president of media relations with the Greater Elkhart Chamber of Commerce.

Announced layoffs from Dutchmen, Newmar RV and Monaco Coach during the month of July certainly do not help matters.

"I think it's going to bounce back, " said Hannon. "We have the workforce and the people are ready and interested in working."

Elkhart County has decades of history showing some real highs and lows as several industries and companies, including Bayer, brought jobs to the county and took them away when plants closed.

"I think it's useful for counties to diversify and establish diversified economies," said Wolfson.

Hannon believes job-seekers should also start retraining and learning a skill.

"The alarm has been sounding for awhile," Hannon said. "Now's the time to stop hitting the snooze button and go to class."

A.M.Mike, your so lazy, you can't even capitalize your letters. I have worked with R.V. workers and Modular Home workers and they are the most hard working and SMARTEST people I have ever met. You sure are wet behind the ears to think that a college degree is going to get you everything. There were college degree people working at RV plants and still are. (Laughing at your ignorance.) There will be more lay offs. This is just the beginning.

MIKE, were you a fan of a rock band called The the? Also with your powerful insight, could you tell me the winning lottery numbers?

S.S. where are these hard working individuals? From what the article says most people are unemployed . Are you and Mitch having delusions where Indiana is in the Green? Open them overworked eyes again! Take another look or come down to workone and lend a hand! We could use a hard worker such as yourself!

Joe, you are an idiot. If you hate your fellow humans as much as your bitter attempt at sarcasm indicates, maybe you should find yourself someplace nice and isolated, away from other people. I am not sure, but I believe you were attempting to make some sort of commentary on abuse of the unemployment system. I believe this article was about hard working people who have lost their jobs not about the small percentage of abusers.

I'm not surprised. OIL is what is causing this. Jill Thompson's party has caused this. They won't allow drilling in America so we are importing 65% of our oil. They want us to keep paying high prices and put people in the oil related industries out of work. THANKS JILL, NANCY, JOE AND BARACK!

"Bounce back"??? Yeah, right. Until the area starts making more fuel efficient vehicles, I don't see a bounce back. It doesn't matter that there are people ready and willing to work, it is the economy dictating the job situation.

Has anyone bringing more factories to town? What about opening a bottle factory and aviation assembly line so peo`ple like those unemployed will have something to eat. Those plants that went to China and beyond please bring them back. We can make tractors and all kinds of equipment to send to other countries. Candies are the item most consumer will take and we should be making a lot of them as well as chocolate and blue berry pies to export to other countries so will have here a pay check.
