MISHAWAKA — For the second time this year, Mishawaka firefighters had to battle a massive apartment fire. The call for help came in around 10 p.m. Friday night from Candlewood Apartments on Grape and Edison roads.

When firefighters arrived, they first had to evacuate all the residents.

Justin Phillips, a resident, was just waking up from a nap. "I walked to the door and they kicked it. They said, 'You need to get out of the fire,' and I looked up and I noticed at least 30 foot flames on top of the building."

Assistant Fire Chief Greg Hunt says flames were shooting through the first and second floors and up into the roof of several apartments. Now, they're assisting with cleanup and interviewing residents.

One person suffered minor injuries, but they were treated at the scene.

At least eight apartments were destroyed in the fire.

The cause is not known.
