A Fulton County man suffered severe injuries Saturday when he crashed on his all-terrain vehicle while trying to avoid hitting a dog, police said.

About 4:30 p.m., Jerry L. Rife, 57, was riding along the side of Fulton County Road 350 West when a black dog owned by Darrell Fields jumped out in front of him, Fulton County police said.

In swerving to avoid the dog, Rife was thrown from the Polaris 4-wheeler, landing on the Fields’ property at 8590 S. Road 350 West.

Rife suffered head and chest injuries and was flown via Samaritan helicopter to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne, police said.

Hospital staff did not release any information and there was still no word on his condition early Sunday.
