SOUTH BEND — They're the faces and minds of the future. But some local students need guidance to lead them toward the path to success.

Dozens of South Bend mentors gathered for the "Mentor Dream Team for Unity Kickoff Breakfast" Tuesday morning.

Former Notre Dame basketball coach Digger Phelps thanked the mentors for their hard work, but reminded them there are still kids who need guidance.

“Until we get involved locally and make a difference in some of these youngsters’ lives so they see the value of an education, our educational system's gonna head into a disaster," Phelps said.

There are currently more than 400 mentors in the South Bend School Corporation. The volunteers are asked to meet with their assigned student once a week.

“I think more people should get into mentoring,” Emery Butts, Jr. told WSBT News. “They may feel like I was — kind of afraid, maybe thinking that it's a hard job and maybe you're not qualified. [But] I think all seniors are qualified. They just have to make up their mind to do it.”
