ELKHART — Police say they were forced to use a Taser to control a student during a fight at school.

That fight broke out between two teenagers at Elkhart Central High School.

Police say they had a hard time getting the 14-year-old student under control Friday, especially because of his size — he's almost 6 feet tall and weighs 230 pounds.

The Taser helped stop the student from fighting with the other student and officers.

"There was a 14-year-old kid who was hitting a 16-year-old kid,” explained Elkhart Police Lt. Ed Windbigler. “As they broke up the fight, the 14-year-old continued to fight and attempted to go after the 16-year-old that he was fighting with."

So police used a Taser on the student. They claim there was no other way to get him under control.

"He was still fighting school administrators and the police officer who was pulling him away from the fight,” Windbigler said.

Police say they rarely have to use Tasers in schools.

"Since we've had these Tasers, I bet it's been less than four or five times,” Windbigler said.

When officers typically use Tasers, two prongs shoot out of the cartridge and go into the person's skin. But when the officer used it on the student in this case, he took the cartridge off and used it like a stun gun.

"It did enough to get him in cuffs and get him into the office so they could figure out exactly what was going on,” Windbigler said.

Some students told WSBT News they have mixed reactions about what happened.

"Well I was shocked when I first heard that there was a fight already in the school,” said Kristie Laughlin. “But I think it was a good thing, if he needed to be Tased to calm him down."

"I thought it was crazy,” Austyn Torres said. “I don't why they would Tase him."

The student was not hurt by the Taser. Police arrested him.

After interviewing the other student involved, officials don't believe he did anything wrong, but they continue to investigate the case.
