Goshen pastor wants to be 'your crazy reverend!'by Ed Ernstes (ernstes@wsbt.com)
The latest billboard from Crossroads Community Church in Goshen uses the current presidential campaign in an attempt to get people talking. There are five other similar billboards across the county. (WSBT photo) GOSHEN — A Goshen church uses an unconventional method to get people involved in discussions about religion. They put up billboards, and the latest one mixes politics and religion. The billboard from Crossroads Community Church says: "OBAMA HAD ONE. MCCAIN HAD TWO. LET ME BE YOUR CRAZY REVEREND!" And there are others just like it at five locations around the county. It refers to the controversy surrounding both presidential candidates and their ministers. “Well I heard of the dialogue about these pastors,” said Pastor Marc Royer of Crossroads Community Church. “My idea was, once I heard it all, was that people are taking it all way too seriously. 'Let me be your crazy reverend' was just tongue in cheek." He wants to change the way people view religion and those who follow it. He said religion isn't irrelevant and can change people for the better. "What I am trying to do is get the dialogue started even if I have to put myself out there and call myself a 'crazy reverend,'” Royer said. This is one in a series of billboards the church has put up in the past couple of years. The goal with each, the church said, is to make people think. Especially those who do not currently attend church. "Maybe we can figure out a way that they will," Royer said. "So the dialogue idea is, on all of our billboards that we have ever done, is try to get the discussion started. So we can figure out how we can achieve getting our message out in the best way possible." Pastor Royer said most of the comments he's received have been positive. He admits a few people were offended by the message. Most PopularMore Good Stuff |
