(WSBT photo) SOUTH BEND — Hundreds of local college students made history Wednesday at the IU South Bend campus. For the first time, students moved into on-campus housing. It's another step forward on a campus that continues to grow. “I've been waiting all summer long!” said student Brittany Deloach. “There's just a lot of energy,” added housing director Paula Smith. For the first time in campus history, students will live on campus. “It'd be easier for me to get to school and I don't have to travel, commute a lot,” Deloach said. The $20 million project began in 2006. The 400 units, which cost students about $5,000 a year, came about as part of the school's push to grow and to become more of a traditional campus. “IUSB has experienced a lot of growth especially in the last 15 years,” Smith said. “Housing has been in the master plan for almost 20 years so I mean the university saw this coming.” And students like Whitney Cole are happy to see it. “It’s college living,” Cole said. “A new experience.” She's a transfer student from North Judson, which would have been a one-hour commute each way without on-campus housing, or as students say, more expensive housing off-campus. “There's a lot of motivation today,” Smith said. “I mean the staff is excited, the university is excited, I think the students are excited.” They are excited to now have a place to call home at school. And a lot more students will attend IU South Bend this year. Enrollment is just over 7,500 students, up from about 7,000 students 10 years ago. Most PopularMore Good Stuff |
