CASSOPOLIS — Two doctors have declared an Elkhart woman competent to stand trial in the May 17 death of her husband’s grandmother in her Edwardsburg area home.

However, it will still be six weeks before 31-year-old Elizabeth Bosworth will appear for her preliminary exam in Cass County District Court to determine probable cause.

On Wednesday, Cass County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Frank Machnik told the court that Bosworth, who had been transferred to Kalamazoo Psychiatric Hospital because of her behavior in Cass County Jail, had been declared competent to stand trial on an open murder charge in the death of 85-year-old Margaret Bosworth.

However, he told Judge Paul Deats that she was "acting out in such a way that they need to treat her" before she can appear in court. He requested a maintenance order that would provide six weeks of treatment in order to "stabilize" her for a preliminary exam hearing.

Elizabeth Bosworth’s court-appointed attorney Dale Blunier said he had requested the competency evaluation at the end of May based on conversations with her family about her mental health history and his own observations of her.

"She did not appear to understand the charges to the degree to be able to assist with her defense," Blunier said after Deats entered the order.

He also said his client, as she waited in Cass County Jail for her competency exam, was transferred by Probate Court order to the Kalamazoo facility.

"There were some self-destructive behaviors and uncontrollable outbreaks and rages," Blunier said.

Elizabeth Bosworth is accused of stabbing her husband’s grandmother in the elderly woman’s home on the 20000 block of Grange Street in Mason Township, between Edwardsburg and Union. She survived the attack long enough for a relative to find her in the home unresponsive and later died at Elkhart General Hospital.

Police said she had been stabbed multiple times and suffered other wounds.

During her arraignment, the prosecution cited money as a likely motive in her murder. Elizabeth Bosworth also faces an additional charge of obtaining money under false pretenses.

"We look forward to proceeding with this case and prosecuting it to the fullest extent of the law," Machnik said.

Open murder carries a maximum penalty of life in prison.

And another thing Miss Libby...It's obvious she does have mental problems. You're right,we as the society don't know all the "mental Illnesses" she's had but we do now.She seems like a monster that will play any little coniving game to get her way and to me that is sick and dimented. For someone like yourself to back up a criminal must be just as sick as LIZ.You should be ashamed of yourself to back up someone like this crazy nut!!Liz deserves what's coming to her and you WILL see justice SERVED!!

Oh Libby...Libby, Libby, Libby. Backing up a friend you once knew, That's right, "Once Knew". You now know her for the real demon and psychotic devil she really is. I hope she is treated fairly as well. Like any other criminal, justice will be served. As for mental treatment, there isn't enough Rx's out there for a jacked up witch like Liz. Apparently the Dr.'s can see right through her little game she's playing but fortunately she can't fake her way thru this now. OPEN UP YOUR EYES LIBBY!!

and to (looks fine to me). That picture was taken on May 20, 2008! Not on August 20, 2008. And like i said to the other comment. Im not defending what she did, im looking for her to get the best mental treatment. Not for her to get let out of prison. She needs to be held accountable for what she has done...case closed!

I just want her to be treated fairly.Am I a bad person for that??!! And obvisously, you dont know her very well either, or you would know of all the mental illnesses she has. She looks ok to me in the picture!!! I feel sorry for all those that think she did not know what she was doing. Come on Libby she killed someone, don't you think she should pay? What if it was you Mother, Grandmother, or just one of you loved ones. How would you feel?

Libby does NOT know all of the details to this case and should quit trying to get people to feel sorry for Liz or her husband. Too bad Libby will be heartbroken when the facts present themselves and she sees and hears what kind of person Liz really is. Libby, I politely ask that you stop posting as if you know Liz. You think you do but I guarantee that you do not. I know for a fact, that your comments hurt those close to Margaret and you sound stupid backing an accused MURDERER!

She did it case closed. But then again the way things are going she might get off on a technicality.

I truly find it hard to believe that she did not know what she was doing. I suppose she's a caring person who wouldn't hurt a fly. Wrong - she killed someone. I bet she's got a real mean streak too.

This poor soul needs a lot of help, she does not know what she wants and much less what she has done to an elderly person. Perhaps someone will start praying for her soul and as she has done so much evil and caused pain on others God will have mercy on her and ther relatives. We should not judge no one because we are not God. Judge not and you shall not be judged. So, I ask all people of God to pray and fast because the coming of the Lord is at hand and this are the signs of the times. Will you

They need to bring back public executions. Our government needs to stop all the appeals that take years and years. If your convicted of murder, you should be executed within 30 days of your sentence - end of story.

I will pray for the family, but I sure as heck won't be praying for Elizabeth Bosworth. She is a sorry excuse for a human being. I am glad they found her competent to stand trial. She knew exactly what she was doing when she killed her husbands grandmother. She should get the death penalty, not life in prison. It's not fair we have to pay to house and feed scum like that in prison. I don't know how old her son is, but hopefully he is young enough to not know or understand what his mother done.

I've known Liz since before she lived in Elkhart. She was trouble in Indy and more trouble after she moved to Elkhart. She has multiple personalities and preyed on those who fell for her "kind" personality and nice disposition. Her husband knew what kind of woman she was and is and was too afraid to leave her. He's almost as guilty as she is in my opinion. Margaret Bosworth was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother who is greatly missed!

My husband worked with Liz at EGH. She had a husband and a baby boy. Please pray for this family while grieving for their family member and losing a mother and wife.

She needs the death penalty WITHOUT years of appeal, this country needs to start doing alot more of that; I don't care if it does not deter crime, it will get scum like this person off the streets.

Any person who would attack and kill someone viciously as she did deserves to fry- competent or not- if youre killing someone you certainly cannot be put into the same class as everyone else!

"Acting" is exactly what she's probably doing to convince everyone she's not competent. Move forward with her case - what she did to the poor old lady is wrong and justice needs to be served.
