Toddler nearly drowns at Chain O' Lakes State Park

ALBION, Ind. — A Noble County teenager used her CPR training to save a toddler in trouble. The 2-year-old nearly drowned while swimming at Chain O' Lakes State Park. But quick thinking by the local teen made all the difference.

Life is pretty much back to normal for Kalyn Sprague, a 17-year-old senior at Central Noble High School.

This past Saturday, she was working her part-time job at Chain O' Lakes State Park.

“And then I look up and I see the mom and she's coming up the ramp from the beach and she's hysterical,” Sprague recalled.

Kalyn said the boy was under water for a minute or two, and was not breathing.

“And I take the child from her and lay him down on the grass,” Sprague said. “I start compressions and I look around and the closest man to me I ask to do the mouth breathing for me."

After several minutes, the boy started breathing on his own.

She said when she responded to the call for help, she developed a kind of tunnel vision, focusing all of her efforts on the 2-year-old.

"Everything kind of freezes, you don't see anything else around you,” Sprague explained. “I saw the boy and that was it. I was surprised by little details that pop out at you — you have all that adrenalin running through you — how blue his lips were, how cold his skin felt and when he opened his eyes, how brown they were.”

She said she's received word the boy is recovering nicely.

(to9:38"Come On..."Ron made a good point. It may be a little optomistic, but a good point none the less. Why does that upset you so much? Going out of your way to attack him makes you sound like a control freak.) The teen did a great job and will remember this for the rest of her life. It is a big win that will constantly inspire her. Too bad for the kiddie, though. HE'LL always remember this too. May he always recall his heroine, and find inspiration in her strength.

Ron Emerson...thanks for dragging down a great story, you idiot. Let me guess, Mr. Glass Half Empty, you saw this as a way to spread your limited knowledge for the better of the people? WRONG. Get a life. Kayln-thanks for stepping up and doing what's right. Teenagers all over should thank you for restoring some respect and appreciation for young people. Best wishes and warm regards as you mature thru life. May God Bless you over and over for your good deed!!

Kalyn: Wow, what a great job of doing the right thing under pressure! Connie and I are thankful and very proud of you. Sometime we will have to tell you how "effective" I tend to be in emergency situations. You'll get a good laugh! God's blessings to you. Hi to Mom and Dad.

If all children will learn cpr and someone teach them how to swim we will not have so many drownings in beaches pools and the bathrooms. All schools and colleges should teach saving skills to would be drowning people, teach them first how to swim then how to save other people from drowning. That way we will be saved from a lot of pain on parents that loose their children in pools and lakes. Supervise your children all the time specially in and around water so the will not drown.

I hope everyone that reads or hears about this story will get CPR training.... one pair of caring hands did more than 10,000 hands clasped in prayer could have done.
