SOUTH BEND — A South Bend police officer hurdled three large dogs Tuesday in pursuit of a hit-and-run suspect, police said.

About 8:30 p.m., in the 1000 block of West Western Avenue, Cpl. Keenan Lane attempted to stop a 31-year-old South Bend man he clocked going 45 mph in a 25 mph zone, police said.

Lane followed the suspect east on Western Avenue and south on Laurel Street, police said. At Laurel Court, the suspect reportedly turned west and accelerated, at which time Lane activated his overhead lights and sounded his vehicle’s air horn.

At the end of Laurel Court, the suspect began to drive his blue Chevy minivan the wrong way around a roundabout, police said. He then stopped, and the van rolled into a white Toyota Corolla, whereupon he ditched the van and ran off.

Lane chased the suspect between buildings at the Laurel Place apartment complex — at one point hurdling three large, aggressive dogs behind one apartment — and then through a metal fence leading back out to the street, police said.

The chase reportedly ended in a church parking lot in the 1000 block of West Western Avenue, where Lane, after threatening to Taser the suspect, ordered the man to the ground and handcuffed him.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of felony resisting arrest; misdemeanor resisting arrest; operating a vehicle without ever having received a license; and leaving the scene of an accident.

Went the wrong way on the roundabout - LOL! Almost every other day I see someone getting all confused about negotiating the roundabouts. And it's usually a vehicle with those over sized silver disco rims.

Anon: at 1:43 - the suspect should have pulled over, then there would be no accident. I don't know of too many innocent people who try to outrun the police, do you???????

Maybe the bad guys need to start honing up on their running skills. Wonder what South Bend neighborhood he came from. I can only imagine.

I'm hoping 12:44 "G" meant that had the criminal had a knife the officer would of been justified in killing this thug.

it soesns't say that the suspect was an 85 yr old man with a crutch. Good job running radar, what about the drugs and thugs?
