SOUTH BEND — A 13-year-old South Bend boy is in serious condition after crashing his pocket bike into the side of a pickup truck Friday.

According to South Bend police Lt. Geoff Forizs, the boy was riding the bike, basically a miniature motorcycle, south on South Walnut Street about 6 p.m. when he blew the stop sign at Prairie Avenue and crashed into the side of an eastbound pickup truck.

Forizs said he wasn’t sure if the boy was wearing a helmet, but he didn’t see one at the scene.

The boy was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries. As of 10 p.m. Friday, he was in serious condition.

Forizs said he wasn’t sure if pocket bikes are street legal. Indiana code states that people under age 15 are not allowed to operate motorized bicycles, defined as a two- or three-wheeled vehicle propelled by an internal combustion engine.
