SOUTH BEND — There are new details about the Southeast Park shooting suspect. The man arrested, Gary Stokes, worked in a South Bend school. Court documents from 1991 indicate Stokes also had been shot by the man he's accused of killing.

In addition to working at Harrison Primary Center in South Bend, Stokes served as a volunteer and media coordinator for the Southeast Side reunion.

It was at that reunion where police say Stokes killed Deric Foulks and injured Mario Rhodes. He's charged with murder and battery with a deadly weapon.

In court documents filed Monday afternoon, prosecutors allege that Stokes walked up to Foulks at the reunion. After speaking with him, Stokes is accused of pulling out a handgun and shooting Foulks.

Stokes told police he thought Foulks was armed, but he did not see a gun.

There were about 1,000 people at the reunion, which was just wrapping up.

While the St. Joseph County Prosecutor's office would not confirm the relationship, court documents dating back to 1991 show the victim of Saturday's shooting, Deric Foulks, was arrested and sentenced to prison for attempted murder. Foulks was involved in the shooting of Gary Stokes, his son and a third person.

South Bend Police acknowledge the incident on Stokes' record from 1991, but say other than a few traffic violations, his record was clean.

NC Coleman, a chairman for the Southeast Side Reunion, told WSBT News he was not aware of any relationship between Stokes and the victims, or a reason for the shooting Saturday. He said he did not suspect the man he knew would be involved in this crime.

"I knew something about it when people started saying it was Gary," said Coleman. "I said, 'Lord, have mercy.'"

An affidavit from the St. Joseph Prosecutor's Office indicated the injured victim, Mario Rhodes, told police he did not know Stokes. He said he heard shots and started running. Rhodes was struck in the back trying to flee the gunfire.

"I was definitely shocked and saddened that someone who grew up on the southeast side, who had seen the changes, who himself was a mentor and doing things with young people, would shoot someone," said James King. King is the co-chairman of the Southeast Side Reunion.

King and Coleman were both very emotional after learning Stokes, a media coordinator with the organization, was suspected of opening fire at their event that preached non-violence on the southeast side of the city.

"He was a good person, I've known him for years," said Coleman.

Stokes is also an employee of the South Bend School Corporation. Parents at Harrison Primary Center were not aware Stokes had been arrested. Some discovered this news from WSBT crews on the scene.

District Spokesperson Judy Tovey said Stokes had been employed with the Corporation for the last five years. Most recently he was employed at Harrison Primary as a parent-teacher liaison with the Title I program.
