SOUTH BEND — Owning a gun comes with the responsibilities of knowing how to handle, clean and properly shoot it. Many first-time gun owners are often too timid to get the training they need. But the South Bend FOP 36 is offering a handgun class for beginners next week.

"We wanted to do something through the FOP that could help educate people about firearms," explained South Bend Police Cpl. Sheldon Scott. "Safety is the big reason we're putting it on."

Two women who took the FOP's first basic pistol class told WSBT they did it because they wanted personal protection.

"We just wanted to make sure we knew what we were doing with the handguns we purchased," explained one woman.

Cpl. Scott said it's important for people who have a handgun or may have inherited one to be comfortable with using it.

"You buy a gun and then you don't know what to do with it once you get it home," he said. "You just don't feel comfortable handling it, so it's very important to get the fundamentals of safety down, the proper way of storing it and handling it and basic marksmanship."

People who take the class will learn safe firearms handling; how to select, clean and store a firearm; firearms parts and operation; ammunition and its function and shooting fundamentals.

Each participant is required to bring wrap around eye protection (safety glasses), hearing protection, a pistol, 100 rounds of pistol ammunition and a baseball hat.

"When you're shooting semi-automatic firearms, [the baseball hat] keeps the hot brass, the spent casings that are ejected from the firearm from landing on your forehead or getting in your eye," Scott said.

The classroom portion of the training is scheduled for Thursday September 4 and the range portion will be Saturday September 6. The entire course costs $100 per person, but includes a membership to the FOP shooting range. The registration deadline is September 1.

For more information visit the FOP #36 website.

The FOP's basic class is open to anyone who can lawfully own a firearm or who is not a convicted felon.

Please put one together for the thugs so when they shoot each other they don't just get maimed. Would save taxpayers a lot of money.

Children (who are mature) can attend the gun safety class. I am a past attendee (who attended with the ladies featured in the segment) it is great. I live on the Southeast side. Have a gun/shotgun and knowing how to use it, and training my children was essential for me. The FOP is doing a great job. Lisa, before speaking out of turn, seek to understand. Criminals don't follow the law, but law abiding citizens do. BTW, I'm a life permit owner.

What a great program! I wish they had this in my area.

Assuming that all firearm owners are "criminals" or that their firearms are "stolen" is an ignorant thing to say. My husband is a police officer and am member of the FOP. I think what the FOP is doing is great, for those who are responsible owners, and who wish to learn how to safely handle their firearm. It's time to stop criticizing police officers and their respective organizations, and start noticing how hard they work to preserve peace in our community.

I was one of the women out there this morning. I took the Basic Pistol class and plan on taking the more advanced class. This class covers ALL saftey aspects. It's the gun owners responsibility to use the trigger lock and also purchase a gun safe. I'm a single mother of 2 daughters. I do have a security system at my home but in these days, the gun makes me feel better. officers can't be the at your house the second the alarm goes off and I'd rather be safe than sorry.

This is a great program and these officers will be DONATING their time for this. I doubt very highly any thugs will be there.

Hats off to the FOP! I took the Women on Target class and am looking forward to this up coming class. The instructors were great. They taught us alot about the weapon that we eventually fired. Safety was their main goal. Education is the key factor here.

I suggest anyone who carries or owns a gun check out the International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA). They have matches all over this area and they teach you skills needed to act while providing more real to life scenarios.

Maybe the cop that shot the dirtbag in Osceola the other night can lead the training class. He seems to be a pretty good shot.

I undersatnd, but, there is no Federal or State Constitutional inalienable right to own or drive a car. There IS to keep and bear arms.

Your jealousy is showing. It's obvious you do not have what it takes to be willing to defend yourself, so consequently you do not want others to be able to who HAVE the guts it takes to defend their or their family's life. Too Bad. Don't give your last name...the criminals might know you are unarmed and afraid.

This is great! Good for the FOP. As a lifetime permit owner and former cop I think this is a great idea. Anyone wanting to own a firearm should be trained by the ones who use them everyday.

Great way to put it D. My fiance is a police officer, he would like me to have a gun for my own safety and we both agree this is a great program. Where else are you going to learn first hand how to be safe when using a gun. You should NOT be learning the first time you have to use it.

Bring more training for those who are killing people in the streets for no reason. There has to be an educated person who needs to handle well the guns and the rifles. Some parents leave this weapons at home unatended children then use them to play and shoot themselves to death without knowing how to use them Is there any courses on how to handle guns for children so they will be safe from firing themselves at home? Then there is the drunks that should be taken away from them this weapons.

D- I am only stating what police officers have told me. That is my right. There is no such thing as a house that is safe when a gun is in it. Just ask my friend, who's husband surprised her one night by coming home from training early. She greeted him with a gun and was seconds away from shooting him. Oh, by the way, he is a police officer. I have my own very strong feelings about gun but respect that other have the right to their own. I just think this is a waste of donated money.

Lisa you need to take a chill pill. There is nothing wrong with the FOP doing this. They are also helping the citizens of South Bend preserve their CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT. Also, unless you are a "cop" don't speak for, or put words in the mouths of the ones you "know" and what they "said". This is a good thing South Bend is doing and hats off to the FOP and the SBPD and everything you guys and gals do up there!

This is a start. But next the needs to be a law that makes people who have permision to carry any weapon, concealed or not to have to renew their linesnes like one would for their driving privilages. This means that they should demonstrate that they are still capable of using a weapon, have good eyesight and judgement. Its easier to carry a gun than it is to drive and it dosent make sense that there is not a program like this. I am for the right to own and carry a firearm, so dont get me wrong.

Lisa, Don't be so quick to judge. There are good people out there who are gun owners,Such as myself. This is a good thing for personal safety. Why dog the F.O.P for doing something educational ????

What is wrong with the police? How happy will they be when they get shot responding to a call for a break-in by the owners of the house. How about traing on keeping your home secure? How about training to dispatch so they appropriately respond when people call in for assistance. I can promise you I will never donate to the FOP again. This is so irresponsible. I smell the the NRA here. Most police officers I know would rather people did not own guns since they are stolen and used in crimes

Good Job FOP. That's the way to help people. We are all worried today about criminals, and we have to protect ourselves and our families.

Good for the FOP. I hope the class is a good one and safety is the NUMBER ONE issue taught. The other key to gun safety is to practice frequently. Find a club and get involved with it. You would not want someone who passed the drivers exam to never drive a car again and then years later, have to dirve to the hospital for an emergency. Practice, practice practice...

I am glad they are offering this help. Many people could use this. Especially with the way things have been lately. Might make some people think before they act.
