MISHAWAKA — A Mishawaka home was in flames Wednesday morning, leaving a family to pick up the pieces.

Mishawaka 911 dispatchers said the fire in the 700 block of North Cedar Street, west of Merrifield Park near Battell Elementary School, was reported about 7:45 a.m.

There were no initial reports of injuries. However, an emergency medical services unit was dispatched to the scene about 8:30 a.m. because of a smoke inhalation complaint.

Nearby streets, including the intersection of Cedar and Lawrence, were shut down while crews worked at the scene.

John Trojan, an employee at nearby Jordan Powersports, called SBT24/7 News and said he was opening up for business when he looked down the hill and saw the smoke and flames.

He said he rushed down to see if there was any way to help before the firefighters arrived. But for residents Mike and Shannon Yeakey, who were uninsured, it's help they may need now after losing household items in the blaze.

Family friends Bob and Sharon Bean, owners of Action Cycle, told the Tribune they are taking donations of housewares, money and children's clothing for the couple at the Mishawaka business, which is located at 915 E. McKinley.

The children are Brandon, 9; Alyssa, 7; and Michael, 4, who suffers from ongoing renal probems.
