SOUTH BEND — Two people who suffered life-threatening injuries during an accident at Edison and Hickory roads in Mishawaka were listed in stable condition Wednesday in the intensive care unit of an area hospital.

A seven-vehicle accident at the intersection about 10 a.m. Tuesday sent 53-year-old Judith Traynor, of South Bend, and 36-year-old Robert W. Schramm, of South Bend, to the hospital.

Police believe Traynor may have had a medical condition which caused her to go at a high rate of speed and lose control, causing the pile-up at the intersection.

When Traynor approached the intersection at Edison, she had a red light, police say, but continued into the intersection. Her Volkswagen rear-ended another vehicle in a line of three vehicles stopped at the traffic light, causing a chain reaction of all four vehicles hitting each other, authorities said.

The Volkswagen then careened off and hit another car that was turning south onto Hickory from Edison. The Volkswagen finally spun and hit another car stopped at the light, facing south on Hickory.
