GOSHEN — A trip of a lifetime has been turned upside down thanks to thieves. An Australian family is now stranded in Goshen after someone stole the RV they were living in.

The Brighton family of Australia came to America for a trip of a lifetime. They bought a truck and an RV and started driving across North America while living in the RV.

"We drove all the way from British Columbia over to here, which is like over 2,000 miles,” Lea-Anne Brighton told WSBT News.

They came to Goshen to have their Sandpiper Fifth Wheel RV repaired when the unthinkable happened.

"[They said] ‘Someone has stolen it,’” she said. “[I said] ‘What do you mean?! I’ve driven over 2,000 miles to have my camper stolen!’”

Police say the 35-foot unit was stolen out of Forest River's "Total RV Repair" lot Wednesday night.

"My daughter yesterday — it's her birthday today — and when we had to tell her [that] her house was stolen she was in tears,” Brighton explained. “This is the only home she remembers.”

To make matters worse, they are stranded in Goshen for what could be weeks thanks to their insurance company.

"They've got to wait 15 days to see if the police can find it then they’re going to wait another 15 days to start to process it,” Brighton said. “It's not quite the holiday we had expected."

The Brighton family says they still love America and everything about it, and are hoping that one American will do the right thing and return their home away from home.

"It's our home and we are a long way from home,” Brighton said.

Goshen Police are asking anyone with information on the stolen Sandpiper Fifth Wheel RV to contact them.

I am the brother of Lea the owner of the RV. Thanks for all the support towards Lea’s family. The USA is a beautiful country, the people warm and friendly. We understand this is just one bad apple that has done this. My sister told me this morning the main guy from Forest River helping her has just taken his vacation while leaving my sister stranded. Shame on you Forest River. She drove 2000 mile to get a serious DEFAULT fixed, gets stolen from YOUR premise and she is left to sort it out HERSELF

Bill how many of those people that Elkhart County sends to the DOC are actually guilty? I would bet close to half are innocent.

Who steals an RV??? it sounds like an inside job at FR, and why was it not secured on the lot??? Geesh they would have had to use a big truck just to steal it...not to hard to spot an RV racing down the road...

We actually enjoyed the company of these wonderful Austrailians and when they emailed us of their loss we cried. I know that they were temporairly renting a home/apt until their RV was repaired. I also know that they were told by Forest River that their gas would be reimbersed for the 2000 miles it took them to return the RV to the shop and renigged on their agreement. What a shame Forest River!!! We hope to meet up with Lea, Julie and the children again before they return to Austrailia.

If this RV was in for repair, it should've been inside a locked lot? Yes/no? Who has access to this lot? I would think there should be a log of who entered/exited this lot? Not to mention security??? What do you say Forest River???

I hope my trip of a life time will not be turned up side down because some one decided to stole my van or my car. I am so careful not to leave my belongings where muggers are around and could rip me off in a blinking of an eye. Keep your things under control and youll be all right. Australian family please come back and see us and we will no way rip you off any belongings. Good luck and please return the truck to this dear family.

Wayne @ 6:20 In case you are unaware Elkhart County is #1 in sending criminals to D.O.C. in the state. Look up the facts if they find these people they will regret ever doing it, of course this thing is probably long gone on its way west by now. I would guess it is probably in Vegas by now, or maybe texas on it's way to Mexico!

Pretty ironic huh? A nice family from a country that once was a convict colony for Great Brittian comes to North America only to have their trip ruined by an American theif. It could have been anyones RV that was stolen. I think it totally awful and feel sorry that they now have to be in Goshen of all places and deal with all this mess for quite a while. I hope these words do not come out of their mouth, "I'm never going back to Indiana again..." Because there are good people here.

Why you would say something like that is beyond me. I sure hope someone will help this family out how sad for the little girl to not know why her home was taken. I hope they catch these awful people how low can someone go. God bless you I am sorry someone would do this to you in our town.

To The Family From Australia: I am so sorry this happened to you. I'm sorry we have such awful people doing things like this in our country, but there are still a lot of us that are honest and good. If you have a picture of your RV that you could share, it might help us to find it for you. Do you have a place to stay in the meantime? Do you have clothes? Maybe all of us could pitch in and help somehow.

As big as Forest River is they had to have security. Look at the flat screen TV's stolen a few years ago from their lots. Surely they have cameras and an alarm system unless it is an inside job. I think Forest River should be liabel and replace the RV with a comparable unit. Warren Buffet owns part of the company now so they can afford Good Publicity and ill afford bad.

Yes how about a picture?? Forest River must have one. If you take the time to do a story on this how about finishing the job with video and possibly a way to help these folks.

Please release information about the RV. Also, if the RV was in an repair lot at a company doesn't the company have camera monitors or security co., This family should have been able to have answers and right away.RV's are not an invisible vehicle. I hope that someone knows something and if they can not turn the criminals in then at least get the RV and its belongings to the family, how would you like this to happen to your family? Good luck. I will be keeping an eye, more info. please....
