ELKHART — A 28-year-old Elkhart man was killed while driving his moped Friday afternoon.

Police say 28-year-old Garry Holloway was traveling south on Cassopolis Street just before 3 p.m. when he collided with a pickup truck that turned left in front of him.

When emergency crews arrived, Holloway was unconscious with obvious head injuries and apparent internal injuries. He was taken to Elkhart General Hospital where he died.

Holloway was not wearing a helmet, according to police.

The driver of the truck and his passenger were taken to the police department for questioning. The Elkhart County FACT team is now handling the investigation.

the average moped gets about 100 miles per gallon. but some get more. on a moped, you could drive to chicago, for less than ONE GALLON of gas! it would take you twice as long, going at only 30 MPH. but you could do it, easily. the only things that beat the savings of a moped are riding a bicycle, walking, or having someone else waste "their" gas to drive you. so don't think that everyone riding a moped, is some drunk who lost their license. some of us LIKE to keep more of our payccheck!

Thank you Christine at Meijer. I was wondering where Garry worked as a pharmacy tech. Thank you for giving him the opportunity and guidance. And yes, I would like his bible. I will call you later for it. It's nice to know people are responding, to let me know a little bit about his life in IN. and elsewhere. I didn't want to keep him from his busy, little life. It seems like God and nice people like you are filling in his life's puzzle for me Now. God Bless you and your family too.

To Garry's Mom, when Garry left our store in Highland to return to Michigan City, He left a bible in his drawer. If you would like us to mail it to you please contact us at 219-934-2133. God Bless Garry and your family.

Garry worked at our Meijer store in Highland, In. I trained him in his role as a pharmacy technician and Garry was incredibly intelligent! He was a God loving man and I am sure he is someplace wonderful now. He was not afraid to show people he was a man of faith. To his family, I am very sorry for your loss.

According to the satellite map- since Garry was traveling south on Cassopolis St., it seemed he was heading home to Mill Creek Dr. (3 miles away). His accident happened Fri. afternoon. I wonder if he was anticipating his weekend/ Labor Day off? He always worked hard.

I just got off the phone with the coroner. He said there was so much of an impact and damage, a helmet wouldn't have helped. Garry had over a 3" open skull fracture in the back of his head, subdural and subaracnoid hemorrhaging, fracture along forehead near both eyes and abrasions on calf. Otherwise he was healthy while paramedics tried to resusitate and was pronounced in the E.R. He said he lost consciousness early. For my sake, I hope so.

To Garry's Mom: I worked closely with Garry at his current web devel. job. He helped me a lot, and I always heard the clients speaking greatly of him. His death devasted one in particular. It will be hard to pick up the pieces now that he is gone. My prayers are still with you and your family. I keep looking for Garry's obituary and wondering when/where there will be services. Many want to send flowers/cards, but we don't have any info yet. God bless.

For Garry's mom: my friend and I came down Cassopolis seconds after the accident happened. I dialed 911 but was told they were already enroute. Your son was surrounded by people who were talking to him and holding his hand. He was not alone during his last minutes and we pray for him and his family. One last comment for those who feel the need to make cruel remarks. Remember this, one day, you or a loved one may be in the same situation. God help you and remember, what goes around comes around.

Everyone under the age of 18 is required to wear a helmet and eye protection while riding a moped. And people do die even when wearing a helmet.

Reply To Mr. Mike 5:16 P.M. = My son does have a driver's licence. If you read the earlier comments he also was a kids Sunday school bus driver(I think you also have to have an advanced licensure for that.) He had many a vehicals/Autos, what he could afford. He probably went to a moped for fuel saving expenses since he was a student, working odd jobs. He does not drink or smoke. As a matter of fact, his current employer(Web page/security for computers) co-signed the loan for the mo-ped. O.K.

I totally disagree with Mike. The reason mopeds don't have as strict of rules are their weight, and most mopeds don't go more than about 30 mph. Newsflash Mike. Mopeds are no longer for drunks. Gas is $4 a gallon, and rising.

indiana needs to step up and consider all moped as motorcycles.you really need to have a motorcycle endorsement to be in traffic .most of the people you see on these have lost their driving privileges. usually due to DUI. dosent sound like scooter guy did anything wrong but i an curious whether or not he has a valid DL or not. i bet the truck driver was set free. he should have been arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter.

Mopeds/putt-putts/bikes etc. do not belong on roads with heavy traffic flows. If a vehicle can not move at least 45 mph it is a menace to everyone on the road.

His good, caring, young life came to an end, abruptly. Garry joined the Army to go to veterinary school. He then wanted to be a Sunday school teacher/precher. He drove the kids Sunday school bus. His last decision was to become a nurse (surprise- like his mom). He did not drink or smoke. Went to college and worked hard to afford his classes, books, apt. and transportation. He was dedicated and a super person in general and a role model. Will miss you greatly.

Recently several people have asked why WSBT provides this forum when seemingly so many abuse it through crude and hurtful statements, comments that are complete nonsense and an avenue for contributors to bounce insults each other and anyone else. This is not a news feature. This is NOT a public service. This IS the cheapest form of entertainment that obviously many people will turn to and that alone distiguishes it's success. It's low rent humor for low rent mentality. Read the next post please.

Very sad story. How many have to die? Why can't people pay attention? There's another person here who has proposed increasing fines for not paying attention to cyclists and moped/motorcyclists. Just like a construction worker. I support that idea. Pay attention.
