SOUTH BEND — Fire crews extinguished a small fire in the 1600 block of N. O'Brien Street late Sunday night.

The fire was limited to one room of an unoccupied house, South Bend fire Battalion Chief Mark Catanzarite said.

Neighbor Cynthia Patrick said the home's owners had just moved out about a month ago. She was sleeping about 11:15 p.m. when she heard sirens approaching.

"The whole house was just smoke coming out everywhere," she said. "I've been trying to call (the owner) and tell him his home is burning, but all I get is voice mail."

The fire was small, but a haze of smoke spanned several blocks in the northwest side neighborhood surrounding the home. Neighbors stood on porches and along the street to watch the commotion.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
