SOUTH BEND — Indiana State Police arrested 35-year-old Damien J. Davis on suspicion of cultivating marijuana plants on an acre and a half plot of land in western St. Joseph County.

The plants were found in an area just north of the 25000 block of Country Club Drive, according to Indiana State Police reports.

Senior Trooper Chad Larsh said the arrest was a the result of an investigation.

“We’ve been looking at it for about a month,” he said.

Even though troopers at dusk Monday were loading the marijuana plants into a pickup truck parked in the lot of the South Bend Country Club, the plants were not located on the property and Davis had no affiliation with the club, according to Sgt. Trent Smith.

Kim Weirick, the club’s general manager, said authorities had to use the club’s property to reach the place where Davis planted the marijuana plants. That is the only connection the club had to the incident, Weirick said.

Larsh said Davis reached the wooded plot via the South Shore Railroad and Conrail tracks located north of where the marijuana was planted.

“It was setting on approximately an acre and a half,” Larsh said. “We haven’t done an exact count, but about 100 plants were discovered.”

Davis does not live in the area. He was arrested around 6:30 p.m. Monday when troopers observed him tending to the marijuana plants, according to Larsh.

“When he started to leave his plot, we took him into custody.”
