SOUTH BEND — Millions tuned in Thursday night to watch John McCain unfold his own version of history. Local supporters gathered to watch the speech at Republican headquarters.

Supporters promised the wave of enthusiasm will push them toward election day. And as the countdown to that all important moment began, there was no hiding the excitement as "their maverick" took the stage.

"It's monumental. Especially for me, being a woman," said Taylor Gagan, a McCain supporter.

"Half of the country now is represented finally on the Republican ticket!" said Chris Riley, the local GOP chairman.

Supporters heard McCain's message loud and clear.

"Country first. And looking at it, yeah, I think he was trying to put country first," said Kevin Mishler, a McCain supporter.

But experts say there were more than just words at play on the stage in St. Paul.

"He's got to come across now throughout the rest of the campaign as someone you'd want as a friend," said political columnist Jack Colwell.

McCain tried to present a clear image and message to both party faithful and undecided voters.

"We're not being disrespectful, or disloyal to George Bush, but judge the McCain-Palin ticket on its merits," said Sean Savage of Saint Mary's College of McCain's effort.

Supporters say, that's exactly what they're doing, and they like what they see. It's precisely the push they needed, to take that convention momentum all the way to election day.

"It's in the grassroots that the election really happens. The excitement's just going to build and build until the election!" said Gagan.

The big question? Would Senator McCain's speech stand up to Governor Palin's speech Wednesday night? Those in South Bend said both were "home runs."

Colwell and Savage agreed there were some hiccups early in the week, but the RNC ended with a bang.

The big questions now: Was there enough contrast drawn between McCain and Obama and enough distance put between McCain and President Bush?

Thanks Rick. I have been wondering who the village idiot was in SB and now I know. Glad to see you finally came out of the closet. Looks like you have some brothers and sisters. To the so called Patriot, if you were a Real Patriot you sure wouldn't be supporting someone that is going to destroy the USA. So why don't you exercise your right to leave and live in another country where I'm sure you will be much happier, I know we will.

Politicians lie. That is what they do best. It does not matter if republican or democrat, they are going to tell you what you want to here. They also have speech writers. I would sound great if someone wrote a speech for me. Past personal facts speak for themselves.

NO QUESTIONS FOR MRS. PALIN, EVER! you are a sexist for even thinking of asking one. we only hired her to scream hate about libs and obama.

To all you mindless democratic sheeple; USE THE BRAIN GOD GAVE YOU! Stop letting the media brain wash you. If it wasn't for the media supporting and promoting Obama he wouldn't have half the support he has. The only people who would benefit from Obama in office is the ones who want to pay more taxes and will use the give away programs he will fund with hard working peoples money. To the Army vet; thanks for your service, but you don't think much of our country if you would vote for Obama!

To "look again" at 11:49- The President of the USA can do PLENTY without congress. . . Just look at any on the numerous EXECUTIVE ORDERS that Bush has issued in the past 8 years as Cheney's puppet. Investigate that and you will see exactly how many of our rights infringed upon. Bush has set some dangerous precedents - the biggest one being a "pre-emptive strike". When other countries do that it's called an invasion. GO OBAMA!

The Republican Party exists, in part, to show how hypocritical people can be. For example, the GOP opposes gay marriage, but its leaders are some of the most flaming homosexuals on the planet, including Rick Santorum, Jeff Gannon, Rudy Giuliani, Tom DeLay, and Karl Rove. However, it should be noted there is no evidence that Karl Rove is actually a gay person. He might just be very unappealing to women

You lefto libs never will admit we're winning the war on terror. While your driving your SUV's to your cushy job where you play on the net all day true Americans are sacrificing self and family for this great land. You really believe you alone are the reason for your freedom and prosperity. I had the pleasure of sharing the holiday with two family members who are soldiers and you can bet they know which party is on THEIR side!!!

Has anyone considered the health issue. He is 72, has had cancer twice (chemo does a job on your heart) and was in a POW camp for 5 years. I respect the man but Palin was a poor choice for a man with those stats.

To Lisa at 10;37, and who has controlled Congress for the past two years? That would be the DEMOCRATS. and when did the gas prices start soaring? Since the DEMOCRATS took over Congress. Democrats like you are the problem-you want to blame the President for everything when the reality is that our country is not a dictatorship, it's a republic. The DEMOCRATS that you voted to represent you in gov't are the ones screwing you. Wake up and face REALITY-Prez can do nothing w/o Congress approval.

McCain made a smart decision picking Palin as his VP. He is thinking they will be able to STEAL the Hillary supporters that are still upset that she didn't win. However, if anyone thinks for just a second that things will change in Washington with Mini Bush McCain, then you are sadly mistaken. Obama is the way to go. I wish people would open their eyes and stop being afraid of change. You see what Bush has had to offer us and now you want more of the same with McCain. Are you people nuts!

For those of you who think Obama's policy will be a government hand out-how racist, there are more of your kind out there each and everyday on the system and living in big houses-even Granger-so before you talk about others look at your own!

To McCain/Palin, Megan and DD-What a group of idiots. McCain is more transparent than clear tape itself. Who is he going to raise taxes for/ the little people of course, the whole speech last night was all about him, the Maverick, POW- Who cares, and maybe if he quits tooting his own horn and sounding like a brat he can get out of the 'blast from the past' and into what is going on now. The Maverick, did not mention important things and facts of our world now. McCain-Pathetic-Palin also-GO OBAMA

More of the same. No way in hell I will be voting for McCain/Palin. I am sick of the arrogant right pretending to be the only ones who love this country, and acting like the Pharisees in the bible when it comes to religion. Once again they think just one more tax cut for the fatcat, and it will trickle down. I got news for McCain, I'm an Army Veteran and I love my Country too. I'm voting for Obama/Biden

I actually like mccain and palin but Graham and Liberman are complete psychos and those are the ones that will be running things. It will be the good ole boys and palin will just be a puppet.I think she may have some value but two speeches that where basically the same speech didnt really earn my vote. Man Liberman and Lyndsy Gram running the country with Mcain what a scary thaught if it does happen you better get your sons and daughters ready to fight in Iran..

I loved Palins speech and she is very coherent in whatever she said. She is young and enthousiastic. Mother of children and a conderful husband. She can make a good vice president. The only thing it is, if Mc Cain do not have a heart attack or something happens to him. He seems to be too old for the job. Would he be able to stand pressure from in and abroad? How is his current health? I am not against older people to run for office, but there is a concern that if his health is not good what are

I am also an ex Republican and was horrified by his speech. More isolationist talk, drilling for oil that we won't see for years, promising cutting taxes while increasing spending...how stupid do they think we are. While I have the utmost respect for McCain, he does not have what it takes to make change. And Sarah "token" Palin just scares me. Her nomination is an insult to women. There are many women more qualified. And please stop saying she is hot and look at her resume.

Hey LoL- you should change your credentials to RINO- Republican In Name Only. No Republican would vote Obama...that man is so transparent, and I am seriously terrified of what he would do to our country if he had the opportunity. Go McCain/Palin! The TRUE patriots!!!
