SOUTH BEND — If you're a Fighting Irish football fan, the University of Notre Dame is asking you to do your part to help the environment. It's your chance to "Go Green" on game day.

"We're going to have about 20 students out at every game, we're going to have recycling containers that will be very easy to access," explained Notre Dame Sustainability Director Jim Mazurek. "Students handing out blue bags and dispensers at the light stands in the stadium as well that will make it really easy to recycle."

Students involved in the program said most tailgaters were very helpful with the game day recycling program last year. During the Michigan State game alone, the program yielded more than 1,200 pounds of recyclable materials.

"We're shooting for more than a 50 percent recycling rate. I would guess tens of thousands of pounds hopefully for the game tomorrow," Mazurek told WSBT.

Those involved in the recycling program will be wearing blue Notre Dame Recycling t-shirts. They will be on campus to answer questions and help tailgaters get containers for their trash. For more information about campus sustainability efforts, visit www.green.ndu.edu..

It absolutely amazes me how negative people can be. People complain when all there is is bad news published but when the media puts something positive out there, people find a way to make it negative. Lets have a little faith in humanity and be happy that ND is making a step towards the right direction.

Well done ND.

In past years, Notre Dame dropped off about 3 dozen corrugated trash boxes in the Stadium parking lot. Last year, they were only dropping off about ten at most - no where near enough to handle the trash (the three dozen weren't enough !!)

Much of the trash left in the parking lots is due to a lack of trash cans / boxes supplied by ND. The few there overflow before kickoff. Fans that didn't bring their own trashbags to tailgate or fans walking through from the distant parking lots have few options for disposal. A few more trashcans would go a long way toward reducing the mess.

I am a fighting irish and I want ot recyclel all glass, paper, plastics and everything else the fans throw away. We need to save the earth and I am willing to start doing in the football field. This wakie wether is getting me on my nerves, the flush floods and rain and the thunderstorms that comes around it is scary. Of course there are no hurricanes yet like in the gulf states but it could come someday if we do not take care of our world and stop pulluting our rivers with quemicals and the smog

I hope they can find these bins. ND fans are very lazy when it comes to throwing away their own garbage. One of the worse stadiums in terms of leftover garbage I have ever attended.

I certainly hope that they are not considering recycling the way they played last year. Unless cowplops are bringing in more the metals.

Good luck with that one. Correct. There is always too much trash created from such a gathering of people. But, good luck with that one. Think ND will need more than 20 people to convince the rest.

Well it is about time. For years I would work the concession stands at the ND games and was absolutely astonished at what I saw! A sea of garbage! I was dodging beer bottles, beer cans, paper plates, food, plastic silverware and so on. I am sure it was just too hard for them to clean up, I mean they were exhausted from having fun all day I am sure. These so called "ND Fans" should have all been ashamed of themselves!

I recycle everything I possibly can. I am tired of people telling me to do something that I have been doing for 30 years, just so that they can look PC and get their name in the news....
