Power outage reported in northern part of Mishawaka

MISHAWAKA – Power and traffic lights have been reported out Friday morning in the area surrounding University Park Mall.

According to St. Joseph County police, an underground transformer near the intersection of Indiana 23 and Hickory Road apparently exploded, causing the power outage to the surrounding area.

The exact cause of the problem is not known, but police and fire crews had initially been called to the area on a report of smoke.

Crews at the scene heard the transformer explode, then noticed that traffic lights were out.

Lights have been reported out along Indiana 23, Grape Road, Cleveland Road, Fir Road and Main Street.

Police early Friday did not know how long the power would be out.

Mishawaka Utilities started hearing about traffic lights not working about 8 a.m. Some of the traffic lights in the Grape Road/Main Street area came began working about 8:20 a.m., but others still were out.
