Niles students busing problems

NILES -- A handful of parents in Niles reported their children missing after they didn't get off the bus Thursday. It was a frightening situation that had parents frantic for nearly two hours.

Parents say nine students didn't get dropped off at the right bus stop. Police say they received calls reporting four kids missing. The school district says confusion was the biggest factor.

Every day Kellie Bella waits at the bus stop for her son Austin. But Thursday when the doors opened he was nowhere to be found.

"I was so scared. It was the worst 30, 45 minutes of my whole entire life," said Bella.

Bella found out the bus Austin was on did stop at the right spot. But the driver wouldn't let him off.

"[Austin] told him that he saw his mom here and saw his mom's van. And he told him it was his stop. And [the driver] wouldn't let him off, told him no," said Bella.

Niles Superintendent Doug Law admits there is a problem. Earlier this year, the district decided to privatize bus service. And Law says that's creating confusion.

School officials say part of the confusion has to do with changes this year. In the past students would identify their bus by the bus number. But this year they have to look for the route number instead.

"And that's been a real confusing factor this week. And it's taking us a long time to get kids on the right bus for the route that they belong on," said Law.

There are 32 bus drivers for Niles Schools. The private company hired 23 of them and nine new drivers. Law says because it's the first week of school, drivers are still getting familiar with students' faces.

"But that's still not an excuse. It's their kids and it's our kids. And we want to make sure they get home safely and get home in a reasonable amount of time. So that's what we're working for," said Law.

The superintendent said Friday schools revised bus route lists for drivers to make sure everything is correct.

If anything like this happens again, parents should first call the transportation garage at (269) 684-1420. If they can't get through there, call the school or the superintendent's office at (269) 683-0732.

There's an article in the Niles Daily Star today about one case where a little girl was on the wrong bus, wrong school and the bus driver told her to get off the bus at the wrong stop!

When services are 'farmed out' to private corporations you can pretty much bid farewell to any personal considerations. In this case students have gone from children to freight. It's not a matter of pride it's a question of profit. Also it never hurts for the people who make these decisions to farm out services have someone to point a finger at and say, "Them! They are the culprits!" It is not in anyones best interest to privatize, except the ones to lazy to handle their responsibilties.

Is every parent of a bus student as frustrated as I am with the incompetence of First Stuent? Trying to get answers is nearly impossible. I have been trying to get answers for a week now and all I get are empty promises of a return call. I am interested to see if this topic will be brought up at the next school board meeting.

Disturbing? Yes! Life changing? I don't think so. If this is the biggest scare you ever get as a parent, you've scated! Try waiting two weeks to find out if a childs tumor is operatable or not. Wait until your child is 2 hours late(and it will happen)and as you lay in bed listening to sirens all over the place you pray you won't hear the phone ring or a knock on the door. I hope you never have to experience terror again but as far as scares goe; 2 or 3 hours on a bus ain't all that bad. Right?

Hey!I think Niles should quit bussing the children. Let the parents take them, that way they all will be safe, well maybe, have you seen some of the drivers who drive thier own kids. Think of all the taxpayer money that could save!

The Roland Barn thing was more than just a few mispelled words and a shook up single parent. It was a slap in the face to bus drivers and any driver or writer in general that took exception to it is justified. Don't try to interpret what other people are thinking. Drivers are taking enough of a bashing because of school systems poor hiring practices. We don't need you to tell us when to be offended and when not to. His SON had to get into the house so the father could be sure SHE was okay?

Every person who cares for a child in any way shape or form should be held to a higher standard and should be expected to not make any mistakes. period. I can't make any mistakes in my job..lives would be a risk and I hold the bus driver who drives my two precious children to the same standard as is expected of me. I feel for these parents, what a horrible experience to go through.

To 8 P.M. - Parents have the right to be worried with all that's been going on. The father made a couple mistakes with his typing. Big deal. Children's safty is not a joke. Bus drivers should be losing sleep over this. They aren't hauling around a bunch of cattle, but the most loved and precious belongings a person can have, and that is their children. He's a single parent and that is very difficult, so give him a break.

This entire situation is due to the school districts greed and corruption problem. the superintendent is scared to cut his salary and other high salary employees and school officials. so someone got this birght idea to privatize the schools bus transportation to an overseas company. Also keep in mind the childrens safety. Since the buses are not state funded, they are not allowed to stop traffic with their red flashers when picking up kids and dropping them off. Perfect way to cut cost doug law!

Parents, I am soooo sorry for what you went through. I can imagine your heartache, and I am glad the kids were found. I think that the private company should have to pay the city for the expense of having the police involved because of stupidity. Really, glitches do happen in new situations but to have that many kids messed up for such a long time is completely unreasonable and unacceptable.

My children were also left on the bus for 2 1/2 hrs Thurs. night.(Not just 2)They got out of school at 3:42 and the bus driver did not finish the route until well after 6:00. I was frantic calling the bus garage every minute until I finally got a recording where I left a few choice words. There were way more than 9 kids involved. One child wet there pants on the bus and a 6 year old was upset because she was hungry. I am also very upset that my children are on a bus filled with 3 to a seat.

My son was the one on the bus that the driver wouldn't let off at the stop. I immediately called the bus garage...busy..busy...busy..then an answer. I was put on hold for nearly 5 minutes. So, I hung up and called the police. When the officer arrived he said that I was #6 to call and report a child missing. They had EVERY available police officer, firefighter, and volunteer firefighter out looking for all of these kids. It was, without a doubt, THE SCARIEST thing I have ever experienced.

WOW Roland, what a compelling story.I laughed,I cried,(ate a little pizza)your story moved me.And such vivid impressions of packs of hungry dogs wandering around bus lots lookibg for children too weak from hunger themselves to outrun the varmits. I am convinced that every bus driver tonight will toss and turn while contemplating ways to improve themselves because they now have an even higher standard to aspire to.They now have a goal and that goal includes impressing some moron with multisex kids

Well we've certainly managed to paint a target on the back of our bus drivers. Even though the majority do not pull away from a home if a younger student isn't in yet. Even though mommy says at the bus stop that Missy was throwing up all night but she's better now.Yea, until the bus turns the corner and a student screams that another just vomitted all over them. And even though the majority of all drivers in every school system treat children like they were their own. Yea, even though, GET 'EM!

Friday, Sep 5 at 5:06 PM Roland Barns wrote ...

Oh, please drivers do not sleep on the job. My kid is in your bus and I am at work. He is supposed to be at home on time so I can call her that she is OK. If the bus is late then she won t be at home and I would think that she is asleep on the bus pound. Then I will get more worried because dogs keep busses safe at the garage and she won t be able to get out all alone without water and without food. So, please be careful and check if no kid is left on the bus. I am a single parent no wife at all
