ELKHART — Nearly 150 local soldiers are on their way to the Middle East.

The Elkhart-based 1538th transportation company of the Indiana National Guard left Camp Atterbury near Indianapolis on Friday.

The soldiers were joined by their family members for an emotional sendoff ceremony. But family members say that the soldiers are prepared for what they need to do.

The 1538th will spend the next year in Iraq.

Its sad that you gusy where not out there to take photos of this GREAT UNIT. Why is it that when a USMC leaves you are right there but when its just a Guard unit no one sees you there??? I am very upset that the news station I watch was not there to see my husbands unit off.
