ELKHART — Nearly 150 local soldiers are on their way to the Middle East.

The Elkhart-based 1538th transportation company of the Indiana National Guard left Camp Atterbury near Indianapolis on Friday.

The soldiers were joined by their family members for an emotional sendoff ceremony. But family members say that the soldiers are prepared for what they need to do.

The 1538th will spend the next year in Iraq.
