NILES — Two Niles men were reported in fair condition Saturday at Memorial Hospital in South Bend following a head-on crash on South Third Street.

Michigan State Police in Niles identified the motorists as John Westgate, 57, of Ontario Road, and Ronald Marrs, 55, of Howard Street. A medical problem suffered by Westgate may have led to the crash, police said.

Police said Westgate was driving south on South Third near Bertrand Road shortly after 5 p.m. Friday when his car swerved into the northbound lane, passing two southbound cars stopped at a stop sign. The car, a 1995 Chevrolet Corsica, traveled off the road shoulder and hit a stop sign and mailbox, police said.

They said the car then traveled back onto the road, heading south in the northbound lane. After side-swiping two northbound vehicles, several other motorists were forced to dodge the oncoming car, police said, before it struck Marrs’ northbound 1996 Dodge Intrepid.

Niles Township firefighters had to extricate Westgate and his daughter, Kandra, 13, of Dowagiac, from their vehicle. Kandra was treated at Lakeland Hospital in Niles and John Westgate was transferred to Memorial.

Police said they were continuing to investigate the accident.

I was one of those vehicles that had to swerve out of the way believe me this does not tell the story he drove on the wrong side of the road for over a mile there were cars in front of me and by time I new what was happening I swerved off of the road just in time to not be the one he hit head on. My girlfriend and I was the first ones on the scene he had thrown up all over in the car also. I really thought he was drunk. But I really hope not.

Could alcoholism be considered a "medical" condition? Sounds like drunk driving to me.

Yeah, not much to do for incidents like this. Not until cars start driving themselves, anyways.

Roland, most people with medical conditions have no prior indication that anything is amiss before the incident that causes the vehicle collision. Aneurysms, heart attacks, and strokes can strike any of us with little or no warning. And heading to see your doc for every weird little normal thing that happens to your body is a waste of our limited medical resources.

That is too bad that people do not realize that they have medical problems when they drive their vehicles. If you feel something is not right in your sight or your body, then go to the doctors office for a check up. There could be a problems in your eyes, the glare on the road is so intense on sunny days that could make anyone blind sometimes, or could be a tumor somewhere in the brain or back acke and so on. No one knows for sure what we have until we go to the doctor before an accident happens
