DOWAGIAC — A 31-year-old Decatur man was arrested on several drug-related charges after an altercation in a school parking lot Friday night.

A Dowagiac police officer was working security at the Dowagiac Union High School football game when someone told him there was a conflict in the parking lot of Patrick Hamilton School, which is next to the football field.

There the officer found a man in a car arguing with a man standing outside the car. The man in the car began to drive away when he saw the officer approach, until the officer ordered him to stop.

The officer learned the fight started after the driver of the car ran into the pedestrian when he was walking across the parking lot. The pedestrian was not injured.

While talking with the driver, the officer saw a large quantity of marijuana on the front seat of the car. More marijuana, including two marijuana plants that appeared to have been recently picked, was also found in the car, according to police.

The driver was arrested and admitted to using marijuana earlier in the evening. He faces charges of manufacturing marijuana, possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana with intent to deliver in a school zone, maintaining a drug vehicle, operating under the influence of drugs, and failure to stop and identify at an accident.

The name of the suspect has not been released.
