AKRON — It was a brain injury that ended the life of 17-year-old Evelyn E. Bolen, who died this week after a fellow student at Tippecanoe Valley High School ran into her while riding a bicycle, according to the Allen County Coroner’s office.

The coroner’s office released the cause of death Friday, also listing it as an accident.

Evelyn, a special needs student, was walking around the school’s running track with two other students and a student helper Tuesday during gym class, according to the report from the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department.

Another student, a 15-year-old boy who couldn’t participate in the class because he didn’t bring shorts, took the gym teacher’s bike and started riding it in the opposite direction as the other students, the report states.

The boy told police that, as he was riding, he looked back after he thought he heard someone call his name. Then he looked forward and saw Evelyn right in front of him. He told police that he grabbed the brakes, causing him to flip over the bike into Evelyn.

School employees performed CPR on Evelyn until an ambulance came. She was flown to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, where she died Wednesday night.

The boy suffered arm and shoulder injuries. He expressed his deep regret in interviews with police.

The coroner’s office reported that Evelyn had an abnormality at the base of her skull, not related to the accident, that compromised her brain stem. That condition was a contributing factor in her death, according to the coroner.

School Superintendent Brett Boggs said Evelyn, a junior, was a popular student who’s been attending schools in the district since kindergarten.

"She's got a lot of friends and everybody knew her," he said.

Evelyn's classmate, you have to give K 2:35 a break. Judging from her comments and grammar, she's waiting for that episode of "Cops" he family was in to air.

I know more about you than you realize. The contents of a posting tell a lot about a person. Your posting tells me you know nothing about the accident other than what was in the paper. Your posting tells me you are quick to find blame whether founded or not. Your posting tells me you are quick apply prejudices from your past to a current situation. I may be young but I am willing to bet you don't have as much support for your "doubts".

We have lost several Valley students in the last 18 months. Evelyn was the first loss of someone my age. We are all dealing with the loss, the realization that we are not indestructible, and that death can happen anywhere;even somewhere as "safe" as school. We are not suppose to bury classmates, but are. Yes bullying happens, but please don't assume that it's always the motive. Evelyn was sweet girl and so is the boy. Don't make this more painful by your uncouth comments. Let us mourn.

Kristin 2:35, did he make a mistake? Yes. Does he need ignorant people making judgements with out caring to learn the facts? No. His "story" was backed up by all the students that witnessed this accident. He tore the muscle off the bone in his arm and chipped a bone in his shoulder when he flew over the handlebars in an attempt to stop. A lot of factors went wrong at the same time to cause this. It is called an accident. Please don't use this tragedy to spread your unfounded beliefs.

Kind of a freak accident, but not that strange. Bicycles and pedestrians don't belong in the same area. Poor Girl.

The story said it was two special needs kids involved in the accident. It was clearly an accident and nobody should be blamed. I think he already feels bad enough... this could have happened to anybody.
