LaPORTE, Ind. (AP) — A man who stole a twin-engine airplane and drove it down a taxiway to impress his girlfriend has been sentenced to four years in prison.

Michael Santos, 39, might have avoided prison had it not been for extensive damage to the plane and his more than a dozen prior convictions. Those included drunken driving convictions that left Santos with a lifetime ban on his driving privileges.

"How many times does it take to get you to comply with the norms of society?" LaPorte Circuit Judge Tom Alevizos said Friday before sentencing Santos, who had pleaded guilty to theft and criminal mischief.

On Sept. 9, 2007, police said Santos was drunk when he tried to impress a girlfriend by climbing into a twin-engine plane outside LaPorte Municipal Airport. The woman was aboard the plane with Santos behind the controls as he drove a half-mile down the taxiway.

He missed a curve leading to the runway and steered into a soybean field, with the propellers chopping up the plants before the front wheels sunk into the soft dirt.

The damaged plane was found the next morning and Santos was arrested several weeks later.

Defense attorney Don Pagos had asked Alevizos to sentence his client to work release.

Santos told the court his first child is due before the end of the year, and he wants to see the birth and hold down a job to support his family while paying his debt to society.

"I need to start providing for my family now. I beg for leniency on this," Santos said.

But LaPorte County Deputy Prosecutor Jennifer Evans recommended prison time, citing Santos' criminal history of more than a dozen convictions and damage to the plane estimated at $160,000.

"...that left Santos with a lifetime loss of his driving privileges..." Ooh! Did that include planes? Did anybody specifically say, "And that includes planes, space shuttles, ocean liners, army tanks and those little plastic animals you pay a quarter to ride on at the Wal Mart. This guys girlfriend is pregnant with his child and he had to do something THIS monumental to impress her? Seems like overkill to me. If he gets 4 yrs for wrecking a plane I wouldn't want to be sentanced by this judge!

Actually, I do not understand why he isn't doing 10 to 20 in a federal prison, the theft, tampering with, unlawful operation of and damaging of an aircraft, are all violations of federal law, given his past, they should have thrown the key away. Good riddance.

You'd think a Judge would be educated enough to know that there's no cure for sociopathy. A sociopath is always a sociopath. Punishment doesn't enter into it. Giving them "a sentence" is irresponsibly reckless. 4 years for endangering the lives of our loved ones drunk driving and stealing a plane, etc. but a cop gets 30 for pulling a fast one on an insurance company. Insane.

If you want to impress your girlfriend go jump from the top of trump tower like the spider man did and run fast because the police will be chasing you for improper use of a tower and endangering your life and people that are around it. Please, do not steal airplanes, they are private property that sometimes are out of fuel and it is not for anyone to take and fly as if it was your car. You could of kill a lot of people who are innocent bystanders and children would have cried for their dead pare
