SOUTH BEND — The Solid Waste Management District board approved a new recycling contract Monday with Borden Waste-Away Inc. of Elkhart.

The firm will handle the service for the next 10 years. It replaces Waste Management Inc., which has held the contract since mandatory recycling began almost 10 years ago in St. Joseph County.

The biggest change customers will see is the switch to 96-gallon containers with lids. They will replace the open 18-gallon bins now in use.

Mark Mehall, SWMD director, said he expects rates to stay the same in 2009 for recycling customers.

County residents are billed $16.20 for six months, which equates to $2.70 a month. South Bend residents are billed separately as part of their water bill.

Mishawaka is not part of the contract, since it operates its own recycling program. Also not in the contract are Walkerton, Lakeville, Osceola, Roseland and Indian Village, which opted not to join.

Ken Himes of Borden Waste-Away said he expects a seamless transition to the new program on Jan. 1.
