Heavy rainfall totaling more than five inches in some locations forced the complete closure of Interstate 94 between Chesterton and Michigan City due to standing water on the road on Saturday.

The flooding was caused by ponding of water in a local field off state right-of-way, which caused excess water runoff to flood onto I-94. Crews pumped water off the highway and reopened the road to traffic Saturday evening.

INDOT crews also are monitoring levels of the Little Calumet River near I-80/94 in Lake County. The sluice gates are currently closed to prevent backflow from the river to spill onto I-80/94. Crews have pumps on hand and are ready to react if needed.
