ST. JOSEPH COUNTY--- People around the Michiana area knew the rain was coming, but never expected a weekend washout.

While the rain didn't damper a birthday party in Granger, it caused a flood of concern for others.

Butch Mann drove from Michigan to see Saturday's college football game at Notre Dame Stadium. He said, "We drove through tremendous rain and had difficulties getting here."

Heavy rains canceled the Bonneyville Mill Festival in Bristol late Saturday. Festival officials also announced Sunday's events have also been canceled.

Expected rains put a damper on fun.

"This morning it was torrential downpours out here, " said Jerry Good of Elkhart County Parks. "The Little Elkhart River started to rise and the canal systems were filling up."

This was the 26th anniversary of the festival. It was also the first cancellation since 1982.

"It was extremely difficult," Good said. "We know how much people look forward to the Bonneyville Mill celebration."

While vendors at the Mill closed down, drivers pulling into the parking lot of Sam's Club and Super Walmart on Indian Ridge Boulevard weren't greeted with low prices. Instead they found a great deal of rising waters from the retention pond. Most of the back parking lot was flooded.

Meanwhile, flooding brought wild waters to Castle Point Apartment residents. The parking areas resembled rivers as cars drove cautiously through the water.

Homeowners in Granger began cleanup efforts thanks to flooded basements. Water soaked carpets were sitting in the driveway of a home in the Sussex Point development. Neighbors living near a retention pond placed sandbags along their property to keep water out.

ProForm workers were out pumping excess water out of the sewers, but it wasn't enough to prevent standing water all over South Bend. Fields and lots for this weekend's football game were full, not with cars, but water.

Portajohns placed in White Field were submerged by water. Muddy tire tracks were found all over the field.

"I didn't pay attention," said Mann. "It looked a lot harder than what it was."

Mann's RV got stuck. Saturated fields made it easy for that to happen.

"It got so deep that we couldn't get out," he said. "A wrecker had to come and it took a long time to pull it out."

"It was pretty deep in the mud." Mann said.

Just not enough to damper his spirits to root for his favorite team.
