SOUTH BEND -- Walking through one South Bend neighborhood on Sunday afternoon brought new meaning to its name, “River Commons.”

“This is our mess,” said Connie Nicodemus. She and her family spent more than 12 hours mopping, vaccuming, and cleaning the basement of her son’s River Commons home. This weekend’s record rainfall flooded the Nicodemus basement and dozens of others across the city.

Some homes reportedly had as much as four feet of standing water in the basement after rainfall reached ten inches by Sunday afternoon.

“The ground is just saturated,” said Nicodemus. “It’s because of the amount of rain that we’ve had and it’s just seeping in.”

Water in the streets of River Commons was waist deep Sunday, leaving homeowners hoping for relief soon.
