BRIDGMAN — Fire crews were called to battle a small fire at the Cook Nuclear Plant, along Red Arrow Highway in Bridgman.

Firefighters were called to put out the fire in a nonnuclear part of the plant, said Cook spokesman Bill Schalk late Saturday.

The fire was in the main generator about 8:05 p.m., he said.

"It's the turbine generator that takes the steam and turns it into electricity, to send it out to the grid for distribution," Schalk explained.

The fire was put out by 8:30 p.m., and there were no injuries or evacuations as a result.

There was no immediate word on the cause of the fire.

"We'll do an evaluation, and we're also right now evaluating the extent of the damage," Schalk said.

The Cook 1 generator remains shut down, but that does not affect service to consumers.

Together, both Cook plants generate about 6 percent of the total capacity of American Electric Power. But when one or both facilities go down, AEP switches to coal-fired production until the facilities are back online, Schalk said.

"It's a big plant," he added. "It can supply a million and a half homes."
