At least a dozen young adults stood outside on the corner of Colfax and St. Louis Boulevard at about 2 a.m. as area law enforcement agencies converged on the residence at 702 E. Colfax Ave., said William Redman, St. Joseph County Police.
ISEP had been checking several local businesses for underage drinking, as part of complaints the agency has received, when information was obtained about the large underage drinking party.
When officers arrived, the students began to scatter and some hid inside the home, according to police. Officers were given permission to enter by the students renting the home. Inside, they found people hiding under beds, in closets, the attic and basement.
Officers found three empty kegs of beer and hundreds of empty beer cans and cups both inside and outside, according to police.
It took several hours to cite, arrest, and transport all 37 individuals from the Colfax residence to jail, Redman said.
The investigation is still ongoing. More information will be provided once all reports are completed by all the agencies involved, police said.
The arrests were part of a joint effort to combat underage drinking by the SUDS Task Force, made up of the St. Joseph County Police, St. Joseph County Police Reserves, Indiana State Excise Police and the Indiana State Police.
South Bend officials announced earlier this month that they planned to crack down on parties around town because of resident complaints.
A weekend in early September had been quite busy as police responded to a number of calls about loud music and parties, and Capt. Phil Trent warned that special units would patrol on weekends as a result.
The ISEP are the law enforcement arm of Indiana's Alcohol and Tobacco Commission, and focus on limiting access to minors.
