Yeatman was previously suspended from the Notre Dame football and lacrosse teams in February 2008 after a DUI arrest. Golic, Jr. is the son of former Notre Dame player Mike Golic, the ESPN Radio Host and star of Mike and Mike in the morning.

At least a dozen young adults stood outside on the corner of Colfax and St. Louis Boulevard at about 2 a.m. as area law enforcement agencies converged on the residence at 702 E. Colfax Ave., said William Redman, St. Joseph County Police.

ISEP had been checking several local businesses for underage drinking, as part of complaints the agency has received, when information was obtained about the large underage drinking party.

When officers arrived, the students began to scatter and some hid inside the home, according to police. Officers were given permission to enter by the students renting the home. Inside, they found people hiding under beds, in closets, the attic and basement.

Officers found three empty kegs of beer and hundreds of empty beer cans and cups both inside and outside, according to police.

It took several hours to cite, arrest, and transport all 37 individuals from the Colfax residence to jail, Redman said.

The investigation is still ongoing. More information will be provided once all reports are completed by all the agencies involved, police said.

The arrests were part of a joint effort to combat underage drinking by the SUDS Task Force, made up of the St. Joseph County Police, St. Joseph County Police Reserves, Indiana State Excise Police and the Indiana State Police.

South Bend officials announced earlier this month that they planned to crack down on parties around town because of resident complaints.

A weekend in early September had been quite busy as police responded to a number of calls about loud music and parties, and Capt. Phil Trent warned that special units would patrol on weekends as a result.

The ISEP are the law enforcement arm of Indiana's Alcohol and Tobacco Commission, and focus on limiting access to minors.

all of this easily prevented by Notre Dame allowing drinking in dorms for of-age students. also by proper city zoning so that students live near other students instead of next to SB residents who usually have to work in the morning/ don't like their stuff being urinated on. the students shouldn't have had such a large noisy party, but then again local law enforcement does specifically target ND students and local politicians run on campaign platforms based on solving the ND student problem

Please do not use police and discretion in the same sentence. Do you know how many police officers break the law yet I'm assuming took great delight in hauling 20yr olds with BAC's under .05 to jail. Absurd/overkill/showboating. As a lifelong SB resident I apologize for the disgusting way the community treats ND students. Lack of respect and no appreciation for all the good the students and univ do for the area. Without ND this community would be a hell hole. Now it's just going downhill fast.

I'm sick of this story being blown way out of proportion. These are all great kids who were just having harmless fun. The only reason the media cares is because they are student athletes. Also, the community needs to wake up and realize all that the students do for them yet they never seem to praise the school for that but rather just complain. Notre dame is a school of kids who are going far in the future and the fact that they party at 20 years old does not make a difference

I don't see the big deal. Most of them probably would have passed out there, walked around the corner somewhere to their apartment, or used mommy and daddy's money to take a cab back to campus. The police could have placed one or two officers in the area and stopped anyone who left driving undere the influence. They should be more concerned with taking down the crack dealers who are poisoning the community. Oh wait, they might get shot doing that. To serve and protect, yeah right!

Lets get a few things straight. The state EXCISE police did the raid and made the arrest. This is what they do. SBPD just assisted. They were required to. ND may give some back to the community, but they take in hundreds of millions of dollars between the three colleges and retirement communities and do not pay a single dime of property tax on any of it. They actually cost South Bend millions of dollars a year. Most major businesses that benefit are franchises and send money out of state.

What if I thought laws against arson were stupid & shouldn't apply to me? Would you be okay with me burning down your house? I really don't thinks so.

Read the article a little better. It says that the South Bend Police were assiting the Indiana State Police Excise unit. The State police unit is responsilbe for raids on parties where underage drinking is suspected. Get real, underage drinking leads to older age drinking and to drunk drivers killing people. Two people recently in our area have been killed by drunk drivers. I hope that ND starts their own crack down on students drinkers.

Does anyone stop to think that maybe, ND got sick of dealing with this stuff, so therefore, they pawned it off on the city of South Bend by making their campus "Dry"? Would you all be making the comments about a waste of police if they killed someone you loved? Damned if they do, damned if they don't.

I can tell most of you are drinkers. Are you not educated enough to realize that alcohol is the top killer of kids this age? Kids this age do not have the same decision making ability that you and I had when we were 18. Experts say they are on the level of a 16 year old compared to past years. Does it not bother you that a lot of them will leave this party drunk and hit the road on the way back to ND? That is not a crime? You all would be asking where the cops were if somebody got killed.

This is just ridiculous! There are way more important things to worry about and way more dangerous people to arrest. We have had way too much crime in the city and this is the police departments top priority? Im not supporting underage drinking, but while the police department was busting some kids who will be out next weekend partying again, some poor woman was being attacked taking out her trash. Great job SBPD. Im glad our city is so much safer now. Let's get our priorities in order!

You people from South Bend are amazing. You want the crime rate to go down, but become cop haters when they try and do something. If the officers shoot someone, you knock them for that. If they don't shoot someone, that is bad, also. If they crack down on one group of people, it is wrong..they should have targeted another group of people...they arrest pot heads, they should be arresting "real" criminals..a guy runs over a cop, but it's not his fault. Inane.

if you live near this area it wouldn't be funny....if you drive in this area you should be thankful that these arrests have taken place. Why is the concept of breaking the law so hard for people to grasp?

While I don't agree with with the legal age being 21, it should be 18, this is just business as usual, police doing their job. They wouldn't have been arrested if they hadn't been causing a disturbance.

Last nights efforts were a combined action by Indiana excise police, Indiana state police, st joesph county police, and South Bend police. No regular patrol officers were used so the public was never short changed. Yes this is a big deal, underage drinkers turn into underage drivers and here locally a drunk driver is more likely to end someones life! Liquid courage does lead to mindless fighting that sometimes escalates out of hand and turn into a murder, ever heard of date rape?

The South Bend Police can't catch anyone except a bunch of kids at a party. Real criminals carry guns and might shoot at them. Considering South Bends so called lack of funds and the amount of money Notre Dame brings in to South Bend maybe the South Bend Police should concentrate on arresting second graders for jay walking.

When there are murders, rapes, assaults and all sorts of serious crimes taking place, actually arresting 45 stunents, what a waste of time and effort. In most free countries of the world it is perfectly legal to drink at age 18, maybe the Ayatollah Khomani should be appointed police chief. This is like using a sherman tank to crack a walnut, other action should have been taken first. Please police, have some common sense.

What a joke!!! Supposedly the police work for us as taxpayers...It sounds as this was the only party they were able to find. I guess you can't get an education and have a good time in South bend.

Okay, we need a couple Lueke bashers to step up and complain that this typre of activity will allienate the university from the city. How N.D, the parents of the students or both should have to reimburse the city for the extravegant expense this will represent to the city. Or why, if they can nab this many people in one seemingly easy exercise has this not done before? Anyone care to speculate that this was just a token act to make it look like something's getting dome? Howabout just a thank you

Wow! Crime must be way down in the Bend if the cops have the time and manpower to arrest 40 drunk kids.

At ND??? Underage drinking? Say it isn't true.

Sunday, Sep 21 at 8:56 AM Frank wrote ...

Underage drinking is hardly worth worrying about; seems like a waste of resources on people who aren't fundamentally dangerous. Drinking and driving or public intoxication are the real alcohol issues, and they're age-independent. So 18-20 year olds considered adults legally, can vote, fight and die for their country, and not drink? It doesn't make sense to me.
