Notre Dame students arrested at college party

Police arrested 37 people at a college party at Colfax and St. Louis in South Bend. Neighbors say their streets are jam-packed with cars and partiers Friday and Saturday nights, and littered with broken glass, bottles and cups the next day. (WSBT photo)

SOUTH BEND — Police raided a college party in South Bend this weekend and arrested approximately 17 University of Notre Dame athletes.

A total of 37 people were arrested. That includes two members of the football team: Will Yeatman — who was suspended from the team last spring after being arrested for driving under the influence — and freshman Mike Golic, Jr. — who is the son of former Notre Dame football great and ESPN radio show host Mike Golic.

”In the very beginning it was certainly chaotic. I was one of the officers there and witnessed it all taking place, so it was definitely chaotic,” said Sgt. Bill Redman of the St. Joseph County Police. “We were finding people hiding all over the place, which included under beds, in closets, up in the attic, even in the basement.”

Police say the people arrested face a number of charges, most for underage consumption. Some tenants of the residence were also arrested for the activity going on at their house.

"They were arrested for what we call maintaining a common nuisance and allowing this type of activity to take place inside the home," Redman said.

The property, located at the 700 block of St. Louis and Colfax, is owned by Mark Kramer. “To the tenants that are living in the particular home, they received an email or should receive it by now," he told WSBT News.

"Saturday we heard just a little bit; but they weren't loud," said neighbor Raymond Jeziorsky.

No matter how loud sounds were from the party, seeing the front lawn tells the story — eight bags of garbage are filled with cans and beer boxes.

"I can leave my windows open up there, and they can party, and I don't really hear them; I hear my TV," Jeziorsky said.

But other neighbors do have concerns. They say during the weekend that street is jam-packed with cars and partiers. Yet it's not so much the partying they have a concern with — it's the after-effects.

"During the week it's [quiet] like this," said neighbor Brian Palmero. "But Friday nights and Saturday nights it's completely insane."

Broken glass, bottles and cups were among the litter that could be found on the sidewalk and in some yards.

"I don't let my son play outside on Saturdays [because of it]," Palmero added.

”One of the main things we want to do is combat underage drinking to make sure that our young people are safe," Redman said.

"The students need to take responsibility for that — they shouldn't be serving underage drinkers," Kramer said. "It's against the law."

Joining Yeatman and Golic, Jr. were at least eight members of the men's lacrosse team, six members of the women's lacrosse team and one member of the women's basketball team.

"Even as early as [Monday] morning, we still didn't know all of the people involved as far as being athletes, and student athletes with the university; that's not our focus," Redman explained. “We've seen the effects of alcohol. Alcohol poisoning deaths, drinking and driving crashes, and that kind of thing where people are injured and they're not making good choices when they are under the influence of alcohol."

John Heisler, associate director of Notre Dame's Athletic Department, stated it is university policy to neither confirm nor discuss any action on student discipline.

Coach Charlie Weis released the following statement late Sunday night: "I was made aware of the situation late (Sunday) afternoon and am currently looking into the matter.”

Prosecutors will review police reports before deciding whether to file formal charges.

I would not consider .01 and .00 as being drunk or even drinking. If a person took a sip they would have .01. I beg to think that there is some justice in a student who was passing by and stopped in for 10 minutes to say hi on the way home, only to find themself now facing criminal charges. If it was one of your children and they were non-drinkers and were charged with just being there, I would say you would have a problem with that.

I dont want my young son to become an alcoholic. I know when he left home for college he promised not to drink, use drugs or have sex before marriage. He is not a dork and was raised as a cradle catholic. When he was a child he prayed the rosary and the Hail Mary by heart. I dont know what makes him drink. I cant do anything for him when he is away. But I need to know if the Franciscan brothers and bishops are counseling him about being alcoholism and drugs. I would appreciate if they do.

Kate....you proved my point. If at age 20 you are too immature to have 2 beers than you are too immature to fight for our country overseas where the drinking age is 18. If it illegal to have 2 beers at age 20 then it should also be illegal to be drafted. Anyone arrested for drinking 2 beers at age 20 should be dealt with in the juvenile system with privacy protection and no permanent record.

The graduate program ranking is embarrassing. You guys are just getting ripped off! Well, at least the ones who pay full price. I did't drink in college and had a ton of fun, so your statement is false.

I think the courts should give the students community service cleaning up the neighborhood. I don't feel this is as serious as all the publicity. When we were in school we DROVE to Ohio where you could drink at 18 3% beer or drove around town passing quarts around. It's better to stay off the roads and in houses. It does seem like the police went looking for students. They went to 5 bars and only got one or two. I grew up near Purdue and saw what went on during games, after games.

How many times have we heard how the people of South Bend embarrass themselves from Notre Dame students or alumni? Well here's a real dignified image.A Notre Dame student diving under a bed to avoid being caught for underage consumption. That would look swell on anybody's resume! That's not exactly the type of behavior that makes me want to get behind a measure that says 18 year olds are mature enough to drink. The way these students acted they aren't mature enough to be out without their parents

What so many people seem to forget or don't understand, is the way alcohol is absorbed in a teen's body. It has NOTHING to do with whether or not they should vote, smoke, or go to war. The hypothalamus is still developing in teens' bodies. Alcohol is absorbed more quickly and they soon lose the ability to make rational decisions, ie: alcohol poisoning, drunk driving, rape, and a host of other tragic choices. We need to teach our kids to obey the law. PERIOD.

The bottom line is that you do indeed sign a no drinking policy as a ND athlete while you are under age and you are active in your sport. The athletes no the rules and broke them. If they want to go to ND and recieve $150,000 worth of education through athletics the rules must be followed or the consequences must be paid.

No patrols or arrests for said robberies. I guess your issues are more important than other citizens unsolved issues.

Society needs to decide and laws need to reflect whether a 20yr is a minor or adult. If a minor no voting privelege no going to war stay in juvenile court system sealed records etc. If adult, no arrests for under .08 in a nondriving situation. As a parent of a 20 yr I cant legally access childs medical records because they are deemed an adult but same child can get permanent arrest record for one beer. Makes no sense. At least SBPD members that have a tendency to DUI were kept busy that night!

Please tell me you're not an English major. LMAO Also, shouldn't you be considering yourself a young adult instead of a "kid"? So were you a juvenile delinquent? Is that why it's okay to break the law now? So why don't you try to act responsible and try to set a good example for all the young children and quit using excuses. (Obviously you're accustomed to giving excuses all your life and getting away with it). Athletes in "high school" get severer punishment & you should know better.

Hey "bartness", your attentional selectivity proves your bias. The neighbors also said that, despite the noise not being a huge problem, they have to keep their children inside on Saturday because of all the broken glass laying around. So you're okay with sacrificing a child's weekend playtime for underage drinkers' right to party? which is not only against the law, but also sets a horrible example for all the kids who look up to these football players. Good job SB police!!!

The same thing happens at every university. When I was at Purdue the same thing was going on even though they had a "Dry" campus. They gave the students tickets and life went on. The Major problem here is not that underage students drink (because lets be honest its going to happen regardless of the laws), but that they've been forced off campus and into residential neighborhoods because the campus doesnt want to deal with it...so now its SBPD's problem.
