Notre Dame students arrested at college party

SOUTH BEND — Police raided a college party in South Bend this weekend and arrested approximately 17 University of Notre Dame athletes.

A total of 37 people were arrested. That includes two members of the football team: Will Yeatman — who was suspended from the team last spring after being arrested for driving under the influence — and freshman Mike Golic, Jr. — who is the son of former Notre Dame football great and ESPN radio show host Mike Golic.

”In the very beginning it was certainly chaotic. I was one of the officers there and witnessed it all taking place, so it was definitely chaotic,” said Sgt. Bill Redman of the St. Joseph County Police. “We were finding people hiding all over the place, which included under beds, in closets, up in the attic, even in the basement.”

Police say the people arrested face a number of charges, most for underage consumption. Some tenants of the residence were also arrested for the activity going on at their house.

"They were arrested for what we call maintaining a common nuisance and allowing this type of activity to take place inside the home," Redman said.

The property, located at the 700 block of St. Louis and Colfax, is owned by Mark Kramer. “To the tenants that are living in the particular home, they received an email or should receive it by now," he told WSBT News.

"Saturday we heard just a little bit; but they weren't loud," said neighbor Raymond Jeziorsky.

No matter how loud sounds were from the party, seeing the front lawn tells the story — eight bags of garbage are filled with cans and beer boxes.

"I can leave my windows open up there, and they can party, and I don't really hear them; I hear my TV," Jeziorsky said.

But other neighbors do have concerns. They say during the weekend that street is jam-packed with cars and partiers. Yet it's not so much the partying they have a concern with — it's the after-effects.

"During the week it's [quiet] like this," said neighbor Brian Palmero. "But Friday nights and Saturday nights it's completely insane."

Broken glass, bottles and cups were among the litter that could be found on the sidewalk and in some yards.

"I don't let my son play outside on Saturdays [because of it]," Palmero added.

”One of the main things we want to do is combat underage drinking to make sure that our young people are safe," Redman said.

"The students need to take responsibility for that — they shouldn't be serving underage drinkers," Kramer said. "It's against the law."

Joining Yeatman and Golic, Jr. were at least eight members of the men's lacrosse team, six members of the women's lacrosse team and one member of the women's basketball team.

"Even as early as [Monday] morning, we still didn't know all of the people involved as far as being athletes, and student athletes with the university; that's not our focus," Redman explained. “We've seen the effects of alcohol. Alcohol poisoning deaths, drinking and driving crashes, and that kind of thing where people are injured and they're not making good choices when they are under the influence of alcohol."

John Heisler, associate director of Notre Dame's Athletic Department, stated it is university policy to neither confirm nor discuss any action on student discipline.

Coach Charlie Weis released the following statement late Sunday night: "I was made aware of the situation late (Sunday) afternoon and am currently looking into the matter.”

Prosecutors will review police reports before deciding whether to file formal charges.
