SOUTH BEND – Police say that a student drug deal led to police finding a gun Tuesday at Washington High School.

A 17-year-old junior male and a 14-year-old freshman female were arrested Tuesday afternoon after a loaded handgun was found in a backpack, along with five grams of marijuana.

A police report by the school’s resource officer said the 17-year-old student allegedly brought the gun and the marijuana to the school, and had planned to meet with two other students to complete a drug deal.

Although police were notified by a caller that a gun was inside the school Tuesday morning, police reportedly didn’t find the weapon, hidden in a backpack belonging to the 14-year-old girl, until almost 2 p.m.

The police report states the 14-year-old knew the gun and the drugs were hidden in the backpack when the items were found.

Both students are currently being held in the Juvenile Justice Center.
