SOUTH BEND – Police investigating a house hit by gunfire couldn’t find a culprit but believe they found a motive: A dead squirrel.

Police were called to a house in the 1300 block of South Bend Avenue, near the Eddy Street Commons building site, about 6:45 p.m. Wednesday after man reported his house had been shot with a shotgun.

The homeowner told police he was inside when he heard a loud noise and went outside to discover holes in his siding.

Police questioned neighbors about the shooting and also reported finding a dead squirrel, with obvious wounds, in the man’s yard.

Police said they had no suspects in the shooting, but believed the home had been hit by someone aiming at the squirrel.
