Hart City RV Supercenter in Elkhart

ELKHART — There is more fallout from a downturn in the RV trade. In the midst of plant closings, a long-time RV dealer is also closing its doors.

"We just can't continue to pour money into a sinking ship,” said Richard Aker, who owns the Hart City RV Supercenter, which is going out of business.

Sales, especially for motorized units, have plummeted. Now it's having a liquidation sale of all its units.

"The last three months, nothing's moving," he explained. "The problem really began with the high cost of fuel, and then the money just started to tighten up with the banks, to where they just didn't want to make loans and so they made it harder for people to get credit."

Hart City is apparently the latest in a line of RV dealers to shut down. Aker says he knows of at least two others in the area, and that number could grow.

"There's probably going to be others in this community, and as well as around the country," he said.

Hart City employee Jai Ann Evans said, “This has just been an awesome job for me and I'm really sad to see it end. Of course it's all tied into the ripple effect from the RV business and it just worked its way down. And that's what happened with us."

“It was a very great place to work and I'm sad we are closing, but I understand the nature and reason we're closing," said employee Chris Brown.

The RV Supercenter also includes a separate business, the Campers Discount Center. It is also undergoing a liquidation sale and will be closing.

Believe it or not, it is the RV that has the perfect structure to be the most fuel efficient vehicle on the road. If the manufacuters would cover the external areas with solar panels then place a modified hybrid system of a Prius inside - an RV could get up to 100 mpg or more. An RV has the space for this and the comfort would not be compromised. Sure the cost would be higher but it would pay for itself in a very short period of time. The technology is proven and is available.

Jill Long Thompson...are you kidding me??? Sure, she points out how many jobs were lost, but she refuses to point out how many new jobs are coming in to Indiana. No, they will not be in RV building, but they are jobs. You will have to retrain. People are getting new jobs...I know several personally. I also am smart enough to know that some are not...but honestly, they wouldn't anyhow due to their age. Sad, but true. Jill would be a disaster like no other. We voted her out once already.

I totally agree "9:29 AM RV Ready Yet?" I've been wondering that for the past 3 years. Most of the RV owners go south for the winter so running vegetable oil instead of diesel would be very feasible.

Its sad really. Without the RV industry in Elkhart there are few decent jobs to be had, and it looks as if that is happening. Most of the bigger companies have left so it doesn't leave much. If you have a job now, better hang on it because there aren't many around places around here any more. Funny, my husband and I came to this area because where we used to live was depressed in the 1980's, looks like history is repeating itself.

worthless junk. You even see how they are constructed. I can make one better out of tree branches in my backyard. They are not safe by any means. NHTSA should regulate RV manufacturing.

I may feel sorry for them too but 5 or 6 kids? I know people love their children but that isn't exactly good planning. We love them too but thought that we had better not have more than we could safely afford. LW

Did no one have an idea to make a hybrid, solar or Hythane-Diesel RV???? All it takes is one show model to start a trend. Being in the RV industry a few years ago, I saw this first hand with the Toy Haulers. VP's and Presidents were sitting on their hands when gas went up to $3 in 2005 - it was during this time that a concept vehicle could have been made and plans for the future.

I feel bad for all those who have no jobs now that the bottom fell out of the RV industry. I for one plan to donate what I can this holiday season for those who will have nothing if not for the kindness of others. We don't have much but I will be donating cans of food and some toys to charity. I have had to get help when I was on hard times so I hope others will remember to give what they can to those less fortunate. You never know when it may be you who is without.

It is almost getting to the point where you wonder if Elkhart will ever revitalize itself? If no companies come to Elkhart (and I mean big names), then Elkhat could become a ghost town... literally. It could join the ranks of Flint and Gary as the most trashiest cities...Population is going to go down, crime is going to go up, and nobody is going to want to raise their family there because of crime and they can't get a decent job either. It's truly sad for this community.

Corey, you hit the darn nail on the head along with my thumb. I'm sure the local gangs and drug trade will support Elkhart. Dash, camping makes life worth living! I planned on seeing the USA in a huge RV some day. This Idea will come back someday, too much money in it not to.

I have never seen an industry that does such poor planning and reactions to projections and trends. They build, build, build till they go bankrupt and the dealers keep their lots absolutely full at all times...look where they are now. This certainly isn't the first time the industry has tanked and they act like they didn't see it coming. Foolish and greedy business people who make poor decisions.

If this places closes where are the workers gona go? This was their life line of support for their families. Some of this people have 5 even 6 children and all of them except the last one is in school and need help with their education and food and medicine. Besides, the wife does not work and she is the one who waits for the children to come home and the supper is ready and she is the one who assists the children with their studies making sure their homework is done properly.
