SOUTH BEND — Republican Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels and Democrat Jill Long Thompson have been campaigning for months. Each wants to lead Indiana in the future.

But an exclusive WSBT/South Bend Tribune poll spoke with 600 likely voters around the state on Monday and Tuesday. What we found is a race in a dead heat.

If the election were held today, the poll shows Gov. Daniels would get 47 percent of the vote; Long Thompson would get 46 percent. Factor in the 4 percent margin of error and it's anybody's race.

The closeness of this poll is puzzling to the Daniels' campaign which cites other recent polls showing their candidate with a double digit lead.

"If you were to believe that, you would also have to believe that running out of money, having no message and not having a presence on TV at all has helped her campaign," said Chris Faulkner from the Daniels campaign.

Long Thompson hasn't had a big presence in the media because of cash problems. Despite that, her campaign says these numbers are a good sign.

"To close those polling numbers from what they were several months ago to really a neck and neck horse race shows great momentum," said Steve Luecke of the Thompson campaign.

The poll shows that pocketbook issues like the economy, taxes and energy costs are resonating with Indiana voters. IU South Bend political scientist Elizabeth Bennion says each candidate will need to tell voters how they'll help grow the state's economy. For Long Thompson, that will mean getting visible.

"She will need to make that push and make her case if she's going to close that gap in some polls or move ahead based on these poll results," said Bennion.

Neither candidate seems to be taking a win for granted and both expect a big push in the coming weeks.

"What you're going to see is an unprecedented amount of volunteer activity leading up to Election Day," said Faulkner.

"This just gives them the incentive to work even harder. To recruit volunteers and I think good poll numbers bring not only more dollars, but more volunteers and that helps in the home stretch," said Luecke.

Pollster Deli Ali says the tightness of this race could be attributed to the hits Republicans are taking across the country because of the bailout bill.

He says when you factor in the margin of error in this poll, Daniels could be up by as much as 10 percent.

Those surveyed were also asked if they would vote for a woman for governor. Eleven percent said they weren't sure. In a tight race like this, Bennion says what those people decide could cost someone the election.

Mitch has done so much for this state especially when it comes to our children. Instead of cutting the budget of the Dept. of Child Services like so many have and would he found other ways. If he had to lease the toll road to make sure that programs that matter didn't get cut then good for him. What does it matter what time zone we are in, time still goes by. The lottery was intended to fund schools and it doesn't, leasing it would bring in money that can be given to the schools now.

Really now people, here in St Joe county where the Dem's couldn't balance a budget without hiring a 50 person committee and wondering why it didn't balance itself, a liberal rag like the SBT shows their gal out in front? Again, four words: Governor of the Year!

MITCH HAS DONE SO MUCH FOR THIS STATE- YEAH HE HAS GIVEN CONTROL TO ANOTHER COUNTRY A VITAL LINK BETWEEN STATES IN OUR TOLL ROAD--WE COULD HAVE RAISED THE TOLL LIKE THEY HAVE AND MADE EVEN MORE MONEY IN THE LONG RUN AND STILL HAD CONTROL OF IT. HE WANTS TO PRIVATIZE EVERYTHING BUT HIS OFFICE, SO LETS GET OUT THE VOTE AND PRIVATIZE MITCH.

Rick, you are correct, sir. She is one of the worst that has ran in quite some time. Even the top state democrats have pulled away from her, and her fund raising is almost non existent in comparison.

Thursday, Oct 2 at 10:01 PM Todd wrote ...

Actually Myrt, I do not believe that is correct. My memory, witch could be wrong is that we were always on Eastern, but our commissioners were trying to appeal that decision and be put on Central time, but they blew the deadline and tried to get an extension while failing. There was a big stink about it because two of the commissioners filed the request without the third's knowledge.

Go Jill Long Thompson! The worst decision this state ever made was Mitch Daniels. He sold/leased the Toll Road for 75 years... so we can't profit from it. He sold the FSSA off, and Hoosier families, and CHILDREN are suffering because of it. We've lost 64,000 good paying jobs, fewer people have healthcare access, and nothing, NOTHING is better than it was in 2004 or the years before. Mitch should try living outside one of his dozen houses will help him realize what it's actually like here!

My man Mitch....reduced the deficit in Indiana, put money in the banks and settled the time. Jill wants to kill more babies, by any means. Ask her what she thinks about partial birth. This woman is a monster with no soul. Vote no to any pro baby killers. Their blood is innocent. Our law makers, by failing to overturn Roe Vs Wade, have killed more lives than any war we have fought in. Think about it before you speak. God is thinking about it.

Well let's see he balanced the budget, he brought in jobs via new companies building here or company expansion via tax breaks. The only thing people whine about is the time change which has been screwed up since 1968 and leasing the Toll Road, which last time I checked it still there and we have a pile of money in the bank earning intrest every day. As I remember when Kernan left office the state was broke, in debt, the time issue was still screwed up and the toll road still lost money. HMMMMM

I sure hope she doesn't win. She might be the worse candidate to run for gov. in 20years. She doesn't have a clue and like most Dems. she can't answer a question directly. As for the earlier comment on turning blue. Your VP cand. is such a goof. Watched his interview with Katie C. and he thought FDR was President during the stock market crash and that this country had TV's. What an idiot. How can you vote for such people? Go Mitch. Thanks for keeping us in the green.

Hey if you Democrats want a female governor we would be glad to trade you ours for Mitch right now! To the person who is still complaining about the time change, get a life its long past the time when the state of Indiana should have moved to the eastern time zone. If you can't tell what time it is ask a 6th grader.

You people that vote for Long Thompson must like high taxes. She is full of hot air and will say anything to get elected to ANY office. Remember when she was running for Congress? Give me a break. I like the way things are going with Mitch running the show.

Todd: Actually St. Joe County went with Central Time, but Mitch (after promising he'd let the counties decide) wrote the Feds and had St. Joe County put on Eastern Time because of our relationship to Elkhard County. While the feds changed the time zone, Mitch was the one behind it AFTER he said he'd stay out of it.

Seriously people..do me a favor, get educated or don' t bother to vote. The state did not sell the toll road. There is a HUGE difference between a lease as an OPERATOR and selling ownership. We still own the road. Mitch did not change the time zone. The Federal Department of Transportation did. Jill cannot change it back. Mitch may of suggested it, but your elected representatives voted to do it...don't like it, blame them. They also voted for the toll road. Jill is a bad egg..beware.

This pole is bunk! It does not even come close to the national pole just released that shows Mitch has a 13 to 16 point lead. You can't sample a small part of the state that is still winning over the toll road and have that be an accurate sample of the rest of the state. People need to get over it and realize how bad Jill Long Thompson is for us. We didn't like her in office the first times, why put her back in now? She is so out of touch on what has happened in the last two years.

Still complaining on the toll road OMG. It goes to show the ignorance on financial issues some of us have. It's a lease, the state and the people of Indiana still have the " deed" to the toll road. There are so many out clauses in the contract concerning road safety, maintenance, and police intervention, it's mind boggling that the company who leased the road agreed to it. Can they raise rates? Sure. It's still a win for us. I am glad to be in Indiana instead of Dem-controlled MI or IL.

For the idiots out there that think Daniels is to blame for your high property taxes. He has nothing to do with that. Property taxes are the result of your spend, spend local governments. Lake county and St JOe have the highest property taxes in the state. Guess what party controls those counties. The Tax and Spend the people's money Demos. I have never met a Demo who did not like a tax.

Keep in mind that the majority of the middle of Indiana are so much for Mitch. They didn't have to deal with the toll fiasco, or the time change fiasco, not to mention Mitch is against farmers making a future for themselves. He wants to sell them out also! Everyone get out and vote in November. Jill, or Andy, make your vote count! (listen to what he has to say, he is more for Indiana at least in his logic!!) Please, do not re-elect Mitch. He has sold us out and will do it again!

I live in Michigan... I hope you voters in Indiana a smart enough to not vote for a Democrat Governor. Look at the huge deficit we have in Michigan thanks to an out of control, overtaxing, overspending democrat government. Look at other states where the democrats are in complete control... New York, Illinois, California.. do you see a pattern?

Just goes to show you. Even with his great financial advantage, voters are wise to Mitch. Three billion bucks for a sold public asset (toll rd.) goes a long way in hoodwinking the public that you are a great and wise chief administrator. What would Long-Thompson do better than Gov. Daniels has already done-highest ranking economically for the state, a surplus, not the usual deficits we had before plus he runs the state like a good sound businessman. I respect Gov. Daniels approach to controlling the excesses in spending. Uninformed voters haven"t grasped the idea, that they(our state government officials) are spending OUR money via taxes. Their responsibility is to spend it wisely. LongThompson only brings more of the old way
