SOUTH BEND — A 14-year-old girl has been charged with possession of a firearm in school and possession of marijuana or hashish in connection with a gun found at Washington High School last month.

The juvenile was arrested after the incident, which took place Sept. 23, and has been in the custody of the Juvenile Justice Center ever since.

Possession of a firearm in school is a class D felony if committed by an adult, while the second charge is a misdemeanor.

Bill Bruinsma, director of the JJC, said the juvenile was charged Thursday and that he didn’t know of any other juveniles having been arrested or charged in connection with the incident.

He said the girl’s next court hearing is Oct. 6 at 1:30 p.m.
