WARSAW — Fire investigators spent much of their Sunday at a restaurant in Warsaw. A fire badly damaged Tascas Italian Steakhouse and at least two other businesses in the same strip mall in the 300 block of Enterprise Dr. along State Road 15.

Tascas opened three months ago.

"It was a picture-perfect opening," said General Manager Jonna Paglicci. "Everything about it has been great."

Now, the picture-perfect windows are boarded up. Tables are full of charred debris.

"This is a business that everybody has worked so hard [to open]," said Paglicci. "The owners have loved [it]."

Now employees like Paglicci and her sister Joni Wampler are shocked at the loss.

"To see [the owners'] dream surrounded by yellow tape, it was horrifying," Paglicci told WSBT.

A passing police officer saw smoke coming from the restaurant around 4 a.m. Sunday. It took crews from five departments about 30 minutes to get the fire under control.

At this point investigators aren't saying much about the fire, including where it started, how it started and whether it seems suspicious.

"We're not making any comment on that. It's under investigation." said Warsaw Assistant Fire Chief Rob Barker.

Smoke damaged at least two other businesses in the strip mall, closing the Warsaw Tanning Company all day Sunday.

"It was really filthy," described Warsaw Tanning Co. employee Zach Johnson. "Everything was black. We couldn't really have anyone come in because everything was so messed up."

Warsaw Tanning Company will re-open at 7 a.m. Monday.

Employees questioned what went wrong, investigators cut through the mess and everyone searched for answers.

"The restaurant was profitable, the restaurant was busy," said Jonna Paglicci.

Investigators said the total damage estimate — including smoke damage throughout the rest of the strip mall — is about $750,000. Both the ATF and police are investigating.

Dear PM Sous and Sushi please note that there is no way the credit card could be used to obtain cash at a casino or anywhere! Only the cardholder could have such access. All purchases were approved by the owner of the card for the benefit of the restaurant. Furthermore, Bank of America has the records and is pursuing the false police report. The real reason for the Surrisi departure from the business is between the owner and Surrisi and not for outside speculation. Facts please, not conjecture.

well...lets just say surrisi was a snake in the grass. I went with him to a food vendors in Chicago b4 opening and he used the owners credit card in a casino on the way back- told me it was the "business account." Im a good employee and try not to challenge my employer. As for everything else, we all worked hard on this place (including the owners and mgmt)and its shameful that others on the outside feel the need to bash our "home"

I agree with Linda. Finally a positive and assertive comment was placed. For those who are playing detective, keep stupid comments to your-selves.

I have read the commits on the tascas fire and I am appalled that people are so rude.Let the police do their job and you rude people quit playing detective. What difference does it make if you say rude things or not. That doesn't change the fact that there are a lot of nice people that lost their jobs over this and they are worried about how they are going to pay bills.Have a little respect for others feelings.

Who is the real "Thug" here? Someone called "Culver Resident" enjoys the luxury of anonymous character assassination while not required to identify himself (herself?) or produce proof. Who will be next to be slandered from the shadows? What a shame that such predators are allowed a voice on what should be a legitimate venue for expressing opinion - not a pipeline for slander and libel without recourse. My condolences to the Tascas crew who have to wade through this muck at this very sad time.

i see comments that are just crazy, for one, kitchen was very clean and least affected by the fire. second we wanted to sell equipment because we were successful and wanted better stuff. third, the owners were learning from the staff and enjoyed their time with us. as for larry, he hired me, i have not seen him since he left. everyone worked very hard to make the restaurant successful, the staff has the ability to overcome anything. as for the meth lab, thats one recipe i do not have.

I would like to know where you are getting your information on Surrisi? And if that is all true why is he walking the streets? How could he operate a business? I am not questioning his character, since I have never met the man. Just wondering where you come up with your info.

Wow! Larry Surrisi a saint? Mr. Surrisi is a thug. Larry has ripped off several businesses in the area, Hundreds of thousands of dollars. "WHAT A CON-ARTIST." Mr. Surrisi owes the state of Indiana over $250,000 in unpaid sales and with holding taxes. This is not including federal or local taxes. So, Mr. Surrisi nobody believes your a good citizen.

The Facts, Just out of curiosity what are you defending "Larry Surrisi" on this thread. Wrong thread buddy. As far As I understand he's been really quiet since he left Tascas without notice. Makes me realize that he really played the owner. The Facts get the facts straight. Do not defend people that is guilty; at least that's how I feel since you mention it without his name being brought up here.

To those of us who actually knew anything about Tascas, know that it was doing great. It was hit and miss just like any other restaurant. For someone to burn it down angers me. Their jeolesy and malice will be there downfall. I can't say i know exactly what happened but i do know that it wasnt carelessness in the kitchen. Thats ridiculous. Someone burnt it down i hope they are brought to justice. Now if you'll excuse me i have to file for unemployment.

Why do people immediately think the worst? Just because we have two idiot candidates running for president doesn't mean Tascas was an inside job. Be careful how you judge others, it will come back to you 10 fold. On another note, I still think out of all the men in the world, couldn't we have come up with better candidates.

We have to wait for the Fire Dept. report before speculating. Those who are really good in blaming others, I'll suggest you wait 'till concrete and raw information is given from the authorities. Remember, hardworking people can also have bad luck. Put yourselves in the owner's shoes right now. If he has nothing to do with this; you are making it harder for him and HIS FAMILY. Whatever happened here is not for you to determine who is to blame for it.

I knew a guy 20 years ago that owned a pizza joint and it was doing really great! So great that he spent money he hadn't made yet and couldn't afford to pay creditors so they put him on cash. Then he put a gallon gas can in the microwave and set it for 3 minutes figuring that was all the time he needed to get a mile away. He never made it out of the building. He would have but the second wall he went through stopped him cold.I got this from the person that was with him and I approved this story!

I have a confirmed report that it was arson. Unfortunately not able to site the source. I liked the Meth Lab comment, to funny. Yes the owner is out of the country. How funny is that! But it will be out in the media soon. Watch for a big investigation...

Larry Surrisi, wrongly accused, spent a full year developing the plans, pro-forma, intellectual property (logos, signage, menus, POS programming for TASCAS. In addition, he spent thousands of hours actually building and designing the space and specifying the equipment. All purchases were authorized an initiated by the owners and fiduciary responsibility was on the shoulders of the owners. Surrisi left for ethical reasons. The facts will be borne out and the false police report investigated.

Maybe the restaurant should have been in a different place like Fort Wayne or South Bend; any major city. C'mon Warsaw? People in this community should be happy that they had a nice place to go out to for once. Any other place to have dinner? Burger King or Taco Bell. No way. Hopefully this will be cleared and good places like Tascas will be open again in the area. But for joe Taco Bell will be just fine. hahahaha!!!!

joe, It seems that you did not take any spelling classes right? No distinctions between lower and capital letters. Anyway, you can learn that when you go back to school again. Are you an inspector? Probably not. If your life is full of failures do not take it on someone else. Let the police/fire dept. do their job. Read a book or do some community work for the public library. That might help your typing/spelling/reading problem.

Yes they are saying it is arson. We all figured that, but I'm here to tell you that the owners I have gotten to know would not do that. Its someone else.........

This restaurant was so good in their Italian cooking. I love to take my 2 little girls and they loved the lasagna and the spagetty. But as I see their carelessness with hot oil caused this reastaurant go up in flames. The were making good money I suppose. There were a lot of customers all the times and I am sure the owner made enough money to pay their employees. But you have to be careful. It is not fun to play with hot oil and fire. Clean up the place real good before you leave so prevent fire
