ELKHART — A 17-year-old was treated for a gunshot wound after he was reportedly shot during a fight late Saturday.

According to a report from the Elkhart Police Department, officers responded to the area of Garfield Street and Roys Avenue shortly before 8 p.m. to investigate a report of a fight with shots fired. Although no one was at the scene when officers arrived, they located shell casings in the road.

Further investigation found witnesses in the area who stated there was a physical fight between several Latino males and during the fight, they heard shots being fired.

A few minutes later, a 17-year-old victim showed up at Elkhart General Hospital with a gunshot wound in the stomach. According to the victim and another teen that was with him at the time of the shooting, they were walking in the area when a vehicle pulled up and an unknown person began firing at them. As they ran away from the vehicle, the victim was struck, according to police.

Police reports indicate that the victim was admitted to Elkhart General Hospital for surgery for a non-life-threatening wound. His condition was not available early Monday.
