ELKHART — A 17-year-old was treated for a gunshot wound after he was reportedly shot during a fight late Saturday.

According to a report from the Elkhart Police Department, officers responded to the area of Garfield Street and Roys Avenue shortly before 8 p.m. to investigate a report of a fight with shots fired. Although no one was at the scene when officers arrived, they located shell casings in the road.

Further investigation found witnesses in the area who stated there was a physical fight between several Latino males and during the fight, they heard shots being fired.

A few minutes later, a 17-year-old victim showed up at Elkhart General Hospital with a gunshot wound in the stomach. According to the victim and another teen that was with him at the time of the shooting, they were walking in the area when a vehicle pulled up and an unknown person began firing at them. As they ran away from the vehicle, the victim was struck, according to police.

Police reports indicate that the victim was admitted to Elkhart General Hospital for surgery for a non-life-threatening wound. His condition was not available early Monday.

I can't remember the last time someone was shot while reading at the library. Sometimes just walking around looking for trouble, the trouble comes to you. Be constructive, learn something, give the appearance that you care not just walk around like zombies searching for trouble.

My brother got hit by stray bullet and we dont know who did it. Would someone heard something the other night so we will catch the trigger and land him in jail. Please, parents lock your arsenal and all your weapons that are hidden under the mattress. Your children are getting hold of them and try to shoot any bird around and then starts hitting on people. Guns, rifles, and shot guns should be kept under a key so no body will get hold of them and hurt innocent bystanders like my brother.

Likely story, of course they weren't doing anything wrong, just walking along minding their own business when someone started shooting at them....
