MISHAWAKA – Police investigating the report of a stolen car found the vehicle abandoned and burning at the end of a residential street late Sunday night.

According to police reports, a 21-year-old woman reported the car stolen just before 11 p.m. Sunday from the parking lot of the Marathon gas station at the corner of McKinley and Grape roads.

The woman told police that she had gone inside the station to use the bathroom and to purchase cigarettes and gum. When she came back outside, she said the car – owned by her boyfriend – was gone.

As officers took the woman’s report, another officer reported finding the car on fire, parked at the dead end of Division Street, near the city’s groundwater pumping stations.

Firefighters responding to the blaze found the silver 2007 Chevy Colbalt engulfed in flames.

Police took the woman to the scene and she identified the car. Audio equipment, including a subwoofer, had been removed.

Police are continuing to investigate the case, and said video surveillance at the gas station includes images of a possible suspect.

Ben Franklin was absolutely anal about taking his keys with him and locking his car. Friends say he would regularly excuse himself from dinner from time to time just to go outdoors and 'double-check' to see if his car was still locked. A very wise man he was, indeed. Not at all like these disrespectful kids of today... Always leaving their doors and drawers WIDE OPEN for all the world to see. Humpf!

Ya gotta lock your car people! Even when you just 'run in' to get something. As ol' Ben Franklin used to say - An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!

Don't leave your keys in the car and you won't have this problem!!!

I'll bet she left the vehicle running while she ran in the station, like I see alot of young people do especially when gas prices were 4.50 a gallon. Maybe they wil learn not to leave their keys in the car or leave it running even if it's only going to be a minute inside.
