SOUTH BEND – A woman was taken to the hospital early Tuesday afternoon after her car collided with a school bus.

There were no children on the bus, police said.

Police and witnesses said the woman drove through a stop light at the corner of Lafayette Boulevard and LaSalle Avenue, striking the back tires of the bus about 12:45 p.m.

The woman, complaining of chest pain, was taken by ambulance to Memorial Hospital. The bus driver was not injured.

Police and witnesses said the bus was northbound on Lafayette and in the middle of the intersection when it was struck by the green Nissan Altima, which was headed east.

The impact was strong enough to momentarily tip the bus off its left-side tires, although the vehicle appeared undamaged after the collision.

I wish I had a camera this evening around 6:15 PM to take a picture of a PHM bus sitting on the railroad tracks, STOPPED, waiting for traffic that was backed up all the way from LWE on Capital. Two trains had just gone through but I cannot believe that this was an acceptable manuver. It was full of foorbal players and cheerleaders. There were kids in all the seats. I shudder to think what the worse might have looked like. Are these people not trained to not stop on tracks? They even have signs!

Everyone needs to be aware of busses and what they are carrying. These things are on the streets all day long and not just carrying regular school children. My wife was on a bus in Laporte a few weeks ago and a girl ran into the bus on a side street and hit the bus so hard it almost put the bus in a tree. This bus was carrying handicapped children in early afternoon. These accidents are rarely caused by the bus driver, But they are taken off the bus until they pass drug screens. Pay Attention!!

Can you even read? The person who hit the school bus was female and the article clearly states there were no children on the bus..and what the heck is "ron"?

In a little bitty Nissan? She's lucky she's around to feel those chest pains. Or, were the chest pains to blame for her poor driving? I'm so glad no one was killed, and no children were aboard at the time. We grasp at small miracles...

I saw him running 80 miles per hour in a 25 and I gave the right of way before it hits me instead he hit somebody else. He was going zig zag and boom there it goes. All the wiskie and the ron was working in his system and he could not control his car then he was no where to be seen. I wonder if his girlfriend was killed. This guy should be in jail right now for hitting school bus and all them kids are scared to death when they heard the horrible noise and the boom on their bus.

Lyn, as tragic as the Cass County bus accident that killed four was, it is very important to remember that bus was a SPECIAL EVENT BUS. It was NOT the large Class 'C' Type school bus. Even though it is acceptable transportation it's main function is to allow TEACHERS, COACHES or any other licensed drive to operate it. This is possible because a CDL that full size drivers must qualify for is not required as long as the total number of occupants is 15 or less. This is what many athletes ride in.

You know yellow is supposed to be the first color the eye sees, that's why school buses and warning signs are yellow.

Undoubtedly the drive of the Nissan was doing something other than paying attention to driving etc talking on her cell putting makeup on messing with her stereo or something.
