MISHAWAKA — Reductions in state and federal funding are affecting hospitals across the nation and right here in Indiana. Memorial Hospital has been forced to cut staff or shift funds from non-core departments to areas that are experiencing growth.

Today's tough economy and competitive environment force many hospitals to look at different ways to maintain their financial health.

“Memorial and hospitals all over the state of Indiana are dealing with significant changes in funding under the Disproportionate Share program,” said Memorial Hospital Vice President of Marketing Diane Stover.

Memorial will lose an estimated $14 million next year.

“We've been looking at different departments for the last year, and in some areas we do narrow, and in other areas we're growing,” said Stover.

The hospital would not disclose an exact number of staff reductions and departments targeted. But, the issues Memorial face are not exclusive.

“We've really just been hit this year by the economy as many other people have been hit,” said Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center President and CEO Nancy Hellyer in a June 2008 interview.

Hellyer said the state's reimbursement for indigent care was less than expected because of a budget shortfall. Ultimately the hospital cut 60 positions.

“We have to make sure that we're being smart about our finances,”said Hellyer.

"This is an ongoing way of doing business; there's no event," said Stover. "We've been looking at things more seriously for over a year now. There's no end number, there's no end date. It's just us doing business the way most businesses do.

Stover said projects at Memorial that are in the planning stages — including the $80 million surgery center and the stand-alone emergency room — will continue.

Tammy Gustasson, with Elkhart General Hospital's Media Relations Department, said the hospital is not affected by the Disproportionate Share funding reductions.

I fear most for patients and the nurses who will have no time to monitor them. No IV team, no diabetes nurse teacher, limited respiratory therapy services and ward clerks. Nurses can DO IT ALL. They are spread so thin that they can't monitor patients...a recipe for disaster and malpractice

To the nurses aides who seems to think that nurses should make less money. I think you're crazy that you should make the same as nurses. The nurses are the ones who went to school to get a degree. Not you! Aides could never do what nurses do without a education and schooling. You need to have your head examined

Nice comments. Looks like Memorial and Elkhart general leaders are using company time to post PR comments about their lame hospitals. How bout running your hospitals the right way?

I'm glad Memorial stays committed to this community and is willing to make the tough decisions needed to keep great healthcare in this region. I've lived in Chicago and the medical care quality here is of the same calibre but with much easier access. Running a hospital has be to be hard with all the funding problems. Keeping good care here and managing expenses is what the hospital staff owes the community. Good luck to everyone involved so we keep great care here inspite of economy issues.

Does it bother any one else that they won't even disclose how many people they are laying off. At least Saint Joseph Med Center was honest to the community in disclosing that number, and I've heard rumor of Memorials being in the hundreds. This has been in the works for a while and yet this is the first we are hearing about...and it sure didn't make Top News Stories of the day like St Joe did either. I guess they still have enough $ to pay people to be quiet!

I have always been told that Elkhart General is the best place for open heart stuff. Good to see they are the best managed as well.

What do you except from memorial hospital after they brought in the new ceo to save money. Rumor has it that Kreg Gruber is making a 6 figue salary along with Phil Newbolt. They are cutting nurses and not hiring for positions that nurses have left. Too many times it has been very unsafe for patients with ICU and CVIC nurses taking 4 patients, with the national standards is 2 patients to 1 nurse in critical area's. They are short staffed in ED with manatory overtime. Many nurses are burning out.

If you don't have insurance, no medical help at the hospital unless you have cash in hand. If you are not a legal citizen no help for you either. Problem solved. Get educated and find a job in a stable work environment. Don't leave school for a measly 15 dollar an hour job.

In an attempt to decipher your comment, I believe that you are proposing cuts to nursing salaries because you make less? That is absolutely absurd.

What do you expect from an administration who dumped a solid performing lab? I say cut the fat out of admin.

Ever since Memorial put in a new CFO this place has gone to hell in a hand basket. Security problems with a lost computer, job cuts, hour increases and many nurses getting out. Pretty soon a nurse with 5 years exp. will be at the top for seniority. Can't wait to see the administrators start working the floor. OOPS, I forgot, they can't, they don't know how.

This is just a continuing issue with our goverment trying to give everyone everything. We are in financial ruin because the goverment dictated the banks had to make loans to people who could not in any way repay the loans. Now the goverment tells the hospitals everyone is entitled to the same exact health care (citizen or not). The founding fathers never envisioned this mess could be created by the goverment! Now everyone in goverment points the finger at everyone else!

Would some nurses aid help those who cannot help? Nurses aids make less money than the rest. So they are hiring more nurses aids. This is putting on all patients on risk of getting more sicker. The nurses make more money than the nurses aides so they should get s ome cut. The administrators should also get half their salaries cut. So every body will even with their salaries. But the bottom line is how the patients that go for a check up or a biopsy they should get the best care possible.

Well there goes the ice sculpted stethoscope at this years Christmas extravaganza! Forget about those don't send 'em away empty handed door prizes from Van Horne Jewelers. At the rate things are going they may have to choose between steak or lobster instead of just having both show up on their plates to appease their appetite for whatever it might want in the moment. Am I exaggerating? Yes I am, they have ALWAYS had to choose between steak and lobster! We're talking health care, not county club!
