Economy creating tough sell for local car dealersby Kelli Cheatham (kcheatham@wsbt.com)

A recent report from Reuters says one in five dealerships could close in the next year. From used cars to brand new ones, finding the money to pay for a new car is tricky, if not impossible. That means local dealers are struggling to stay in business. For used car dealers like Bud Kendall and Ray Driver, closing a deal is much tougher than it used to be. "Times are tough," Kendall said. "Can't buy cars, can't sell them." Kendall owns Michiana Enterprise, a local used car dealership. Ray Driver owns the American Tire & Auto dealership in Plymouth. "We're down probably 30-percent from this time last year," said Driver. Both men say the explanation is because people are buying fewer cars and turning in fewer. Most Tuesdays at 6 p.m., you can find both men at the Michiana Public Auto Auction in South Bend. "They need to have what we like to call back row cars, which are the cheaper cars," explained Michiana Public Auto Auction Sales Manager Sarah Stroup. The crisis on Wall Street has frozen credit, meaning used and new car dealers can't get the credit to buy as many cars for their lots. Even the auction lots are emptier than usual, which means selling a used car isn't such an easy sell after all. "I think dealers are holding onto their vehicles more because they're not selling the higher dollar cars as much," Stroup told WSBT. A normal sale at Michiana Public Auction runs between $500 and $2,500. That's one reason 17-year-old Kelsey Haas spent her Tuesday night there. "[I'm] trying to get something under $1,000," she said. "Mom's trying to take us to work and school, and my other brother to work, so it's a very must have thing right now." But for every car that sells on the auction block, another stays on a local car dealer's lot. "It's rough," said local used car dealer Bud Kendall. "I don't know what else to do." Michiana Auto Auction also says one thing you'll want to keep in mind before buying a used car — always budget for repairs. For example, if you buy a car for a thousand dollars, it will probably need a little work. If you bought the car new and like most put $0 down and financed it for 60 to 72 months you will not be able to sell the car for what you owe on it. Sorry. That is why I stressed in my original blog to pay cash for cheaper cars and use a lot of money down for more expensive vehicles. A lender won't take less than the pay off and the average car is not worth payoff until sometime after the 48Th month. Not everyone that is selling their car is getting rid of it because something is wrong with the car. Mine looks and runs beautiful, but I'll have to let it go back if I can't sell it. My child comes first. You may not want him, he's buried in his trade and about $2000 upside down, plus he's a mutt! Boy the last guy to sell him really ripped his head off and (I know you know the rest of that one). So you want a payment of $100 @ month using $5000 down with payments not to exceed $375, $500 tops, right? Do you really just show him his payment and put the pen down then keep still because the first one to talk is dead? I been there, done that,AND YOUR MAMA, ASIS! How about instead of bad economy articles we have articles about the big dealer auctions who harass the "little" auctions and try to put them out of business. I have been in the car business for 15 years and business has never been worse. Average people do not even have $200.00 down. This article also fails to tell you that the ave. age of these vehicles is 8 to 12 years old. Do you think that someone who has no money down can really afford to be demanding a WARRANTEE on an old vehicle that, more than likely has over $1K miles on it? The price of scrap has also affected the market for used cars. Wednesday, Oct 8 at 11:39 AM DH Former American tire employee wrote ...Hey Ray! Seen ya on the news!
