MISHAWAKA — Getting a mammogram is a bit easier this month thanks to the Mobile Medical Unit of St. Joseph Regional Medical Center.

The unit has been traveling around the county all month offering scheduled and unscheduled breast exams. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

"We move all about so that we're more accessible to some women so they can come in and get their mammogram and then go about their daily activities, " said Patti Nietch, a nurse practitioner at Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center.

Nietch says early detection can save your life.

"We all think we have our health and that's a great thing but we have to be proactive and one of the proactive things is getting your mammogram," she said.

Thursday the van is stationed at the Kroger's on Merrifield in Mishawaka.

It's recommended women get an initial mammogram at age 35 and then every year once they turn 40.
