ELKHART (AP) — A giant metal shredder that can crush up to three cars each minute will be sold in an online auction.

Bidding for the so-called "Mega-Shredder" will start at $9.7 million and is expected to increase in $200,000 increments. The sale run by Hilco Industrial, an international auction and liquidation group, starts Tuesday.

Sturgis Iron & Metal, which owns the huge machine that dismantles junk cars into scrap metal, ceased operations in June and is in bankruptcy proceedings.

It isn't clear what will happen to the shredder, which drew the ire of neighbors upset by noise, dust and vibration since it began operation in 2006. Auction documents say the shredder must be removed from the site by Jan. 15.

But that could depend on the buyer. Fort Wayne-based Steel Dynamics bought Sturgis after the company filed for Chapter 11 protection in April and has an option to purchase the site, but didn't buy the shredder. The Truth reported the company could keep the shredder in Elkhart if it exercises its option on the site.

Arvis Dawson, an executive assistant to Elkhart Mayor Dick Moore, said officials would rather the shredder is dismantled and removed. He said the shredder is not compliant with city ordinances and significant work would be required to bring it into compliance.
